This is what happens when a tread lets go, but not completely...(pics)
 

https://www.ford-trucks.com/user_gal...id=129041&.jpg The tire tread let go at 60 mph about 10 miles after I got going for the day, so it wasn't even hardly warmed up yet. The tread satayed attached about 18" off the tire, ripping the rear fill neck off and smashing the tube such that I couldn't use it, luckily the front tank fill was still tere, just knocked loose as well, but not smashed. It ripped the metal off where the mud flap was attached. This is after I had straighted it out some, the sheet metal was folded up to the bed floor..

Used to be a running board there, the chunk that is torn there is where it used to be. The fuel door won't stay open, no spring, and the plastic around the cap is broken away from the bedside. The support to steady the bedside is all bent to heck and torn off too. :-X16

Ouch! Looks like it tore the box up pretty good. It sounds like the major damage was to the tank filler assemblies and the lower box side support. Good job for keeping it under control and thankfull no one got hurt.

Looks like that box has seen a few Iowa winters, too...

yep, the outside has spent some time in the muck... The big rust spot is where they piled ont he bobo after someone must have hit the side... It spent a few years as a coop truck... The inside of the box is basically rust free though...Makes me think about putting a flatbed on, just don't like the way they look on straight wheel trucks. The tire never lost air, just made a heck of a racket while it tore the truck apart. The area behind the wheel was bent clear up to the bed floor... I did some straightening to be able to run it, and had to take the running board off, since it was swinging freely, held up yet by 1 bolt.

Had a couple of those happen too. Most memorable one was a nasty old 77 E250. Earlier in the day I had just bought a new can of WD40 and set it against the passenger side rear wheelwell, on the way home that night the tire chucked the tread in a violent manner. After the dust settled inside, I noticed the WD40 was now siting on the dash
