heard a good one today and laughing hysterically ever since

A reputable guy who sells 48-79 parts for a living told me today that 351M/400 used oil pans for 4x4 77-79 trucks was a rare item and worth between $150 and $200 depending on shape. Am I crazy or did 70%+ of the 77-79 4x4 trucks come with 351M/400 engines? The only other option was 300s...correct?
Give me your opinion but Id like to cash in on the $1350 in pans I have stacked under my shed. LOL!

Wooo Hooo!
I just picked up a '79 today with a 351m-400. It is a F350 with a D60 front. If the oil pan is in good shape, I just made $50. If it is not so good I should break even.

STGFordCrazy04 09-15-2006 08:46 PM

I figured everyone would get a laugh. The sad thing is that someone will believe him and actually pay that for it.

brentleedragon 09-15-2006 08:48 PM

lol someone might start a scam to newbies :-( non FTE members sucks

SRD4X4 09-15-2006 09:02 PM

I guess he gets $450-500 for 78-79 351/400 Bronco pans.

Steamir 09-15-2006 09:18 PM

You say he's reputable?

STGFordCrazy04 09-15-2006 09:32 PM

Hes been in the business for a long time and I have bought a lot of sheet metal from him. He has it for sale this weekend at a swapmeet with a $150 price tag which oddly enough is also what he wants for a rust free Arizona door. Go figure. For obvious reasons I dont want to give his name but just beware of scams. I thought people here would get a kick out of it.

Next time you see him you might offer to trade him some margaritas for his moonshine (Big and Rich) seeing as your pans aren't worth as much. lol

I don't know about the pan, but the Dip Stick is no longer available from Ford. I have a rear sump pan, dip stick, and pickup in good condition. I tried to sell it at a swap meet and got no takers.

So a rear sump, pickup and dipstick is hard to come by? I'll have to go out to my parts trucks and check em out. BTW, does the pan have the hole for the dipstick, like some of the FEs? What vehicles did these come in?

Much obliged,
Mike

I think that the pickup can be purchased at an auto store, but the pan and dipstick are hard to get.

STGFordCrazy04 11-04-2006 09:05 PM

News Flash,
There is nothing rare about a 351M or 400 4x4 oil pan, pickup, or dipstick for a 77.5-79 truck. If you think about it the only engine that was available in a 4x4 truck between 77.5-79 was a 351M 400 and a 300-6. 351M and 400 shared the same oil pan so at minimum if production numbers were all equal then 66% of all 4x4 trucks produced between 77.5 and 79 had this elusive oilpan not to mention the trucks that were produced in the early 80s.
This was just a scam that this guy was running to try to lure in a unfamiliar buyer into thinking it was somthing special.
ie If a part fits a 69 generic mustang and also fits a 69 Boss 429 then you could get more money if you advertized it as a "Boss 429 door" hoping to lure a sucker willing to pay $$$.

Yes, oil pans are available on the used market, but there is no source of 'new' rear sump oil pans as there is with a front sump. Dip sticks are even harder to come by. What is on the used market may have been damaged. Again, no one makes a replacement for these, like they do for a front sump or a Windsor.
