David,
I can't give you any valid first-hand experience regarding chips. Maybe you can check in the Chips and Tuners forum here at FTE and see what info you might pick up there. |
are there even tuners and chips for the 4.2? maybe the newer ones but what about a 99?
Let us know what ya find out!! |
Yes there are both tuners and chips for the 4.2 including the 1999 model. I don't have any personal experience with any but I have heard good things about the SCT tuner. I am actually looking into it right now and hopefully will have one in the next few weeks.

Whats the difference between a tuner and a chip?
|
a chip just plugs directly into the pcm. a tuner plugs into the obd2 port and you can adjust anything you want. (governer, tire size for mph gauge). i havnt personally used a turner or chip but i have heard good things about the diablo chip.

I have a FordChip in my truck and it made a noticable difference.

I used a JetChip in my truck and was very impressed at first. After about 1000 miles or so I started having issues with my EGR valve. Not sure if this was caused by the chip or not but the truck ran fine before hand.

I bought diablo sport chip8 months ago for my 03 4.2 5 speed. If you want to know the power increase, here is a good example: turn on and off your ac and that will be the differance.

Diablo chip
I use a Diablosport 3 position chip for a 03 f150 4.2 5 speed from Motorhaven which I had progarmmed for 87, 93, and 105 octane-the 105 is for E85. This chip is awesome and there is a big difference in power especially with the E85. You have to use a good brand of gas with the 93. I usually stick with Phillips or a local chain called Family Express. The worst performance with the chip has been with Clark and Pilot gas. Pilot was the worst. My engine clanged and banged bad and had to shut the chip off. I think they must have mixed up thier stock because the pump it came out of was a separate 93 stand alone pump. All the rest of the brands are of acceptable performance. The best combo for power and mediocre mileage I have found is a 50/50 blend of E85 and 87 octane gas with the chip in the 93 octane position.
