1995 ranger no start

I have a 1995 ranger 4.0 ,auto, when starting the relay clicks and the fuel pump clicks on and off to. I switched the relay with a similer one and the same thing happend. I ran a jumper wire from the battery to the fuel pump and it runs fine. I also put a obtII scanner on it and it gets link errors. check all fuses in engine compartment and in cab all fine. Any ideas?

Welcome to FTE!

Well...it's not OBD-II, so there's your problem with that scanner.

However, I'm not 100% clear on your problem. You say when starteing the relay clicks and the fuel pump clicks on and off. The fuel pump is supposed to come on for two seconds I believe to pressurize the fuel system for an easy start. Afterwords it should go off, then come immediately back on when the engine is cranked. What exactly is yours doing?

not starting

The fuse box fuse says obtII fuse? I went and rented another scanner and that one will not connect eather to get any codes? The fuel pump flickers on and off just like the relay constantly, not like when starting good It turned on then off after a second till it started.

I would check for spark next. If no spark, consider the EEC relay. Some folks think the only relay that fails is the F/P relay, such is not how it is in the real world. It's reasonable to expect that if there is no voltage applies to the ECM that you will get some strange, if any, codes.

Oh, I wouldn't be quite so sure about that. From what I've read in my travels and in here, there was a transition from the old EEC-IV to OBD-II in 95; the build date determines what the vehicle has. The sticker on the core support should also indicate which system it has.

Read the instructions from the scanner. Sounds as though the procedures to activate it haven't been followed. Same as OBD1 (aka eec IV) turn key to run position. See dash gauges activate. Then proceed to engine running tests. Not sure why the fuel pump is in question here. Description sounds like it works fine. What's the truck doing? The wizzes on this forum need something more to go on.

I have two rangers 2001 also, and I put the first scanner, obtII on it and it connected fine with no codes. I checked for spark and their is good spark! Could it be a roasted Powertrain control module? being it won't communicate with the scanners? What tells the fuel pump relay to connect to the pump? I think that cant make up its mind to stay on. After checking spark I pulled plug and it was bone dry, no gas.

I think there is a second computer for pwertrain. Doesn't that only control the tranny, though. Don't know much of ANYTHING aboutt he newer Rangers as my books don't cover them. If it IS a hard computer failure and not a bad wire to the FPR or something, seems to me the main computer would send the sig.

Well I'll be hanged! The PCM seems to have taken over much of the functions from the main, according to a site on SHO Taurus. http://v8sho.com/SHO/elecengsensor.html Still, seems most likely a bad wire or loose. I have a lot to catch up on. Ouch.

My March 1995 Ranger is OBD-II compatible, the port is under the dash. I have heard that the 1995 model year is OBD-1.5, it is only partially compatible with typical OBD-II scanners.

I have also had a bad PCM before. However, the truck still ran fine. The scanner still connected to the PCM, and pulled codes PO-351 and PO-352. The coil packs were fine, the crankshaft position sensor was fine. Finally, we replaced the PCM and all was well with the Check Engine Light again.

I can't get the engine running to get a check engine light to come on. Wish I could! I have had O2 sensor go bad before and the check engine came on, I took it to autozone and they put a scanner on it , and read the code for the sensor. It connected fine then. Mine was made december of 1994. Did they have to flash the new PCM with your specks from your vin number before you got it? They told me at Murreys I would, when I gave them the part number off the PCM in the truck now. $150.00 , I need to make sure it's not somethig else first before I spend that kind of money. Thanks.

You should be able to pull codes with the key on and engine off.

If the port is under the dash, it's OBD-II.

I don't remember exactly if they needed my VIN# or not. I think they did. I remember something about Ford not even listing the part number that was on my original PCM. I had to take Ford my PCM and they sent it off to be remanufactured and programmed. I think it was about $200, I wanted to get the Ford one so I would know it was done correctly.

Mine is under the dash also.

Like Billy says, 1995 was an OBDI/OBDII transition year for the Ranger. And like him, I have read about many people with '95s having trouble pulling codes. Some code readers are better for it than others.

Pcm

Went to ford parts today and ask about a PCM for the ranger and they said it was $260.00 and they needed the truck to prgram it, not just the vin. or the old part (Ripoff) Autozone ordered it for me, $122.00 + $87.00 core, and they said with the original part number they can get the right one without the vin. or the part. I hope its right. Will post the results when the part gets here and I try it. (Fingers crossed)
