;) Hello, I'm looking into a '65 f100 4x4-is there any indication in the vin about 4x4? Should it be indicated on the vin plate somewhere if it's a factory 4x4?---------Thanks

As far as I know, ALL '65 Ford 4 x 4s were "factory". In the late '50s, Ford got away from using Marmon-Harrington for their 4 x 4 conversions. The VIN tag should be on your driver's door. If the VIN does not match your truck, consider that maybe someone swapped the door at one time and didn't swap the tags..

According to my '64 shop manual, the Rating Plate (on the door) does not include a code that indicates whether a truck is a 4X4 or not. Unless that is in the "BODY" code. My shop manual does not tabulate those codes.

The first part of your vin should read F11 for a f-100 4x4 or F26 for a f-250 4x4. Hope this helps

the vin is f10j...It shows trans-"f", body-"d81" ."cert net h.p." is 129-would anyone know which engine was in it(No engine now).Vin tag doesn't mention transfer case and only mentions one axle-"09". Maybe the door doesn't go w/truck?--Thanks for the help

There are several things you can check quite easily that will tell you if your truck is a factory 4x4. With the exception of some 66 F100 4x4s, the 61 to 66 F100s and F250s came with 120 inch wheel base, the 57 to 60 model years box (for styleside), the 61 to 64 cab with step-up and higher center hump and the 61 to 64 style inner fenders. Check the VIN stamped on the top of the right frame rail at or near the right front wheel. If it starts with F11 or F26 as jjb stated, you have a factory 4x4 frame. The F100 transfer case was a single speed while the F250 was a two speed, 4H and 4L.
