sand paper
 

hey guys, just wonderin somethin here..I'm bout to start sanding my truck, but i dont know what grit to use..I went to walmart tonight and they had 220 grit and 800 grit and i think the 220 was wet/dry sandpaper...this is the first time i've ever done this..what grit do i need and how do i need to do this? also, walmart had the spray cans of primer, i'm plannin on gettin some of this with one of those spray handles. How many cans do i need? is it cheaper to buy it in the big cans and use a paint gun? any help here is tremendously appreciated, I'm trying to get this done by friday cause i'm leavin for college saturday.

The 800 should be ok to rough it in for a rattle can primer job. It will look better if you shoot it with a gun, but it will be a less money to use the rattle cans.

my uncle used to be a paint and body man in rison before he had his stroke and he told me that napa has primer called crossfire and that it would be the best thing to get for the money and instead of sanding it by hand, he has 2 D.A. sanders and he's gonna let me use one of them and his primer gun...i should be taken care of..is there anything i need to know bout sanding with one of these sanders?

Good question. I've never used a power sander on sheet meatal.

Unless you are trying to remove paint or work down body putty, I would stay away from the DA sander. The dual action will leave tracks that you will have to go over with at least #400 to #800 water sand paper to smooth out. Don't know the condition of your paint but if in decent shape, you could take a good degreaser like simple green or even dishwashing liquid and wash the vehicle using scotch brite pads instead of sandpaper to get the tooth in the paint that you need. Rinse down good, dry and wipe down with enamel reducer, paint prep or some type of cleaner . Spray away. Carroll

The hood and roof of the truck are rustin pretty good and we're tryin to get the rust off..dad said we'd try to sand it down to the metal and then primer it...eventually it'll get to the paint process, but right now, if i can get it primered i'll be happy
