escort ignition wiring...
so i have this 91 escort with the 1.8 dohc engine in it...the ignition lock switch is shot and a new one cost a pretty penny so i figured i could just hook up a switch and a push button .....the push button would be the starter and the switch would simple be the key in the "on" position, but i dont know what color wire is what...there is a six wire plug and also a two wire plug that go into the ignition lock switch....does anyone know which wire is which?

Here's something easier. If it's actually the lock that's shot, look at the bottom of the ignition switch assembly. There's a black plastic section that's held in with 1 scew and a clip. Remove it the screw and pull on the clip and slide it out, it's the actual electrical switch You can leave it hang and actuate it with a screwdriver till you can get another lock assembly. (Might try a wrecking yard to save some bucks.)
I went through this on my dad's old '91 Tracer (same car) but I just bought another switch and lock assembly complete from NAPA. I think it was about 60 bucks IIRC. |
60 bucks aint bad, i actually rigged it for now....i popped the guts out of the ignition and "broke" the locks out inside then slide it back together...so i can pretty much start it with anything but it still looks like the normal key ignition

That's even better. Nothing like having your ignition all busted up and taken apart, you ever get pulled over and the cop takes one look and assumes you stole the car!
I guess they're a troublesome part on those cars, my dad had problems twice with his. First it was the electrical switch portion, and then the lock itself. |
If you have the patience of a saint, and the hands of a jeweller, you can fudge the old electrical switch apart, clean and lube the connectors, and re-assemble it. I had one where the switch down further on the collumn, moved by a metal rod, would make intermittent contacts... Not fun going down the road. Took it apart, cleaned and reassembled, and it was fine for years
