Want to Rebuild a 1980 F250 400ci

Pretty new to the automotive world, but I think that's what I'm going to go to college for. I'm used to EFI as I do a lot of research on my Mustang, including how to get performance out of the engine. New to the carb thing :)

Some questions I have:

1. How much hp and tq can you get out of a 400 and for how much money?

2. Does a 2 barrel carb = 2 valves per cylinder and a 4 barrel carb = 4 valves per cylinder?

3. How do you tune a carb engine to get the right Air/Fuel mixture?

4. Is there an aftermarket auto transmission that can handle more hp or is the stock tranny capable of 300-400hp?

Thanks!

1. pretty reasonable. average 300hp 400ft/lbs for $2500 assemble/disassemble yourself

2. 2 barrel has two venturies. (Think of it as two injectors on the top of the intake)
4 barrel has four

3. carbs have alot of adjustments on them. There are screws in the metering block that you turn in or out to adjust a/f mixture.

4. The stock C6 is a very capable tranny. In stock form it should hold if you don't beat on it. If you do want to beat on it, you can build it to hold up to much more than 400hp.

Thanks 2classics! Could you explain the carb a little more? There are two "injectors" for the whole engine or 2 per cylinder?

Also, is there a 4 speed or 5 speed auto you could replace the C6 with?

And what is the axle ratios? (Are the front and rear exactly the same or are they like .01 apart?) Axle code is 37...

Just a tip for using the forums, this is the 335 series engine forum. Run the axle and transmission questions thru the driveline or 80-86 truck forum. We also have a carb forum for carb adjustment and applications. Please try to ask only one question per thread or things can get very confusing. :-X22

Check out our sponsor here, TMEYERINC. If you want closer to 400 hp, look at his 400 project in his web. You will want to talk to Tim, he's got the parts and knowledge. He does have a short block ready to go, or if you do your own build he has the pistons and anything else you may want. Good Luck
