Problem with ignition switch

I have a 1995 Ford F250 diesel and the other day i went to shut it off and wasnt able to. The key and tumbler just kind of spin freely. I took apart and found that the rod still moves back and forth but its like there is no resistance down on the other end. Could i have a problem with the electrical ignition switch? The steering column lock does not engage when i turn the key back and forth either. I am able to turn the key to start it but i am not able to shut the ignition off. I think something probably broke down lower in the column. Also tried taking the tublem and key assembly out and using flat head screw driver to make the rod move and the same thing happens. Any ideas on what could be wrong? Does anyone know of a website with a detailed exploded view or drawing?

Thanks!

Your problem is with the upper actuater. You will have to take the steering wheel off, remove the turn signal mechanism, and then remove the pins from the tilt joint and pull that up to gain access. Inside there, there is a part that looks like a shepard's hook, that's the part you need. Your local Ford dealer should have the part. Mine was $9.95. They also provided me with an exploded view of the colum.

Sounds like a similar problem that I had except I couldn't start the truck. There is an electrical ignition switch at the base of the steering column that has the tendency to fall apart after several years. If your rod is moving when you move the key..and there is no resistance...check the electrical ignition switch. It is a 30 minute job and an $10 part! You have to remove the two bolts holding the steering column in place to get to it. I just replaced mine this last weekend. Easy job!

I checked the electrical switch and it was fine, i actually took it off the column so i could manually start it that way. The problem must be somehwere in that plastic rod in the housing. I't at the ford dealer today getting fixed.. i just dont have time to do it right now.. been workin 12 hr days. It's worth it to me to not have to deal with it when i get home haha. Thanks for the help.
