4.4 Diesel in a F-150
This is information that I got from the June 19, 2006
Automotive News regarding a diesel that Ford is report- edly developing for the F-150. The article is written by Amy Wilson and states that Ford is developing a 4.4 liter V-8 diesel engine for use in the F-150 later in this decade. The new diesel awaits final approval, but suppliers and industry sources say that Ford is well along in the planning process. Wilson reports that the engine would be a scaled up version of a 3.6 liter V-8 diesel that Ford builds for Range Rover at a plant in Dagenham, England. The timing isn't certain, but if it is approved, it would take 2-3 years to launch production. According to the article a Ford spokesman, Nick Twork, declined to confirm the report. He did say, however that Ford intends to maintain truck leadership. According to Wilson's article, suppliers and analysts say Ford could produce 100,000 diesel powered F-150s. Sources also said the engine could be used in the Expedition. |
It's about time they did something like this. A smaller t/d in a light truck is just the ticket. 20 mpg should be attainable.

I would think a set up like that could get better then 20 mpg.

Seems to be the same thing I said here at the FTE about 8-9 months ago only to be told that the 4.5 Babystroke was the choice. This 4.4 engine is already being produced in Turkey and is on the roads in Europe. It is new but will come to the USA with Euro test miles to the general public. Round numbers: 300 HP and 450 Ftlbs torque. The engine design is inhouse meaning it is a FORD design and they don't have to buy it from anybody or put up with another companies BS to make it work or get it produced. I think it's the best thing that has happened at Ford since the Triton engine. Emmissions testing is ongoing and I would expect certification around the end of the year. FWIW, it is a far, far cleaner burning engine than the Babystroke will ever be meaning fewer emmissions controls.

-Matt :-tap Thanks Matt, Your a great man.:-X22 |
I went to the Ford website the other day and built an '07 Expedition, since my wife is getiing the itch. Anyway, there's a survey at the end asking what options customers would like to see. One of the choices is a 4.5 V8 diesel. I would think that it's already being engineered for North American use.

No problem that will be fine. |
I was wondering what to expect as far as power/torque.
This is the description for the diesel 4.5 litre... 4.5L V8 Diesel Engine 300+ horsepower and 450 lb.-ft. of torque. The diesel is designed to get 3-4 mpg better fuel economy on average compared to the 5.4L gas engine. |
