Anyone know the best year/model to get the parts from? Any difficulties or tricks? I'm looking for the easiest transition...I'm starting to look like Popeye!

Brian, there is no easy, bolt on power steering for these years of 1/2 ton 4 wheelers. If you are willing to do some cutting and welding however, it is possible. I have a kit from Ibeling repair and conversions, (319) 347-2491, in Applington Iowa, that works VERY well. It uses the steering box from a late 70s 1 ton van. The instructions are clear and complete, but it will take at least all day to do it. DF

I've done alot of these. We use 76-79 Ford F150 /Bronco 4x4 boxes. We cut a triangular piece of plate that fits the 3 bolt pattern of the box. We drill and tap have to slot the frame to drop it in. We probably have spares of these if you need. Advantage@Web77.com J.R.

I'm fairly good with cars, but not sure what slotting the frame means. As far as tools, I got a lot, but metal tools, including a welder I lack. I heard you had to cut the steering shaft and reweld it to size??

I can see how the steering shafts need to be modified for length but that shouldn't be too much trouble. There is a company that sells new shafts www.borgeson.com. My question is concerning the drag link and other steering parts. Do these need to be replaced, modified? When I get my new p/s gear is it pretty obvious where to cut or notch? Thanks.

Yes, we had to shorten it. My friend has a welder and he cut a short piece of pipe that fit as snug as possible around the shaft. He cut the shaft and set it in angle iron and welded it. Then he slid the pipe over the junction and welded both ends (now double welded). He did this because I was racing and he didn't want it to break. You have to put a small slot in the frame so the triangular steel can slide into the frame so you can bolt the box to it. I could photograph this and send you a CD or email some PIC's so you could see first hand. How close are you to Tucson, AZ?

I read your email about the power steering conversion and I have a similar situation. I"m trying to add ps to a 1972 4x4 3/4 ton 390 big block. Would that information apply to my truck also? Any suggestions would be appreciated very much. Thanks Joe

If you could please email me the instructions that would be great. I'd rather not spend a whole lot to do this - there's 2 self pull it yards in Sacramento I'm sure I can get all the parts for.

I would be very interested in seeing these as well. I am looking to do the same thing on a 72 F-100 4x4, but do not want to spend $700 on a kit that still requires welding. Please forward to oldenkam@nortelnetworks.com

Thanks,
Dale
