Comp Xtreme 4x4 cam, anyone?
 

Getting my 400 ready to go, and can't use the old Crower that was in the 351M I took out. Had flat spots on a few lobes. I know that the DEH cams are the standard, but I was wondering if anyone had tried this cam. The engine I will end up with has +.030 bore, stock piston, stock head machined for roller rockers, edelbrock intake, holley 4bbl, headers and dual ex. I will also be adding a new double roller timing set, and the correct springs. I bought a complete long block, so I can get by without the K-kit. I was wondering if anyone had ran one of these 4x4 cams recently, or if someone could help me understand if it would be any better or worse than one of the DEH cams. Here's the numbers I got for it, and the 255DEH and 265DEH to compare:

What would be the pros/cons of the xtreme vs the DEH in my setup?

I like the 265DEH for towing at highway speeds, but for low RPM grunt, the 255DEH is better. This is the first I have seen the XE 4x4 cam. It has a little more lift than the 255DEH, but the stock heads don't flow much more above 0.450" lift.
Dyno sim gives the XE an advantage at 2000 RPM with 438 ft-lb torque, while the 255DEH gets 430 ft-lbs@2000. The 255DEH is a little flatter, and produces 298 HP@4000 RPM, while the XE has 297 HP@4000 RPM.

I think that the 4x4 XE is a slightly better cam, and could be much better with some head porting so the heads flow better at higher lifts.

Cool, thanks danlee. I doubt my truck will tow very much, so it will be a toss-up between the 4x4 and the 255 for me. Decisions, decisions......

guess it would help if i read the whole page. that specific cam that i was looking at is for the 460. wonder what it would cost to get.... nah the DEH is cheaper and just as good. Thanks again for running the numbers danlee.

460? Why the high lift? Stock 460 heads don't flow as good as stock 335 series heads at high lifts.

For best results you want a custom hydraulic roller with the timing of a 255DEH, and more lift, also ported or aftermarket heads.

Maybe I am not looking in the right catalogs, but I thought they didn't make this cam for a 400? Is this a new offering or am I retarded?

It is for the 460, not the 400.

Ive got the XE 262 in my 78F250. Believe this but ive got the same engine set up as what you described except I have a carter 625 for a carb. So far im very happy with this cam. its got lots of torque, and sounds nice at an idle.

No, I was retarted. It is for the 429/460. I didn't pay attention to what the chart said at the top. :-roll
