Pulling Steering Wheel

Howdy,
The turn signal shutoff on my 68 F250 is not working and I have heard the switches wear out pretty easily. Trouble is, I can't get in there to take a look. I assume I have to remove the steering wheel to get at the switch, but the threads on the wheel are all hosed up. I (cautiously) tried a 5/16 18 bolt and even tried to run 5/16 18 tap but I can't even tell if this is the right thread to tap it back to. Before I get any further, anyone know off-hand what size I should be re-tapping to? Any other suggestions or advice?
Thx.

I think they're 5/16 X 24. It doesn't take much to get the wheel off so if you are using a wheel puller and can just get a little bite it should come right off.
