Remote oil filter leaking on 5.4L Expy

Hello all you Bearers of Expedition knowledge. I have a 97 expy eddie Bauer with the 5.4L, it has the remote oil filter. Well, after searching the threads I see they all eventually leak so I need to fix my hoses which leak at the crimps. How about instead of replacing the hoses, just remove the whole remote filter and put the filter back on the engine block? I know I would need to replace the lower radiator hose, but what do I need to do to the engine block, a fitting of some sort? I am unsure, is this possible to do?

Thanks

Mine were leaking as well. I had the stealership do the work. The hose assembly cost somewhere in the area of $215 I believe and another $200 for labor. The front axle had to be removed to allow access to the engine mounted end of the hose.

The 5.4l engine has plenty of room to remove hoses, I have them off all ready and room to get at oil filter for that matter. I believe unless it was an eddie Baur model or you bought the option, it has a standard oil fillter install. The problem is when you change it, the oil runs all over the front pumpkin and makes a mess.

Yeah it would cause a big mess. But on mine there simply isn't enough space for a oil filter with the hump of the front axle there.

How's that? The front axle is the same whether you have the remote mount or not. A filter will still fit on it just like on those without the remote mount filter.

BTW, I do not have the remote mount, but changing the filter is still surprisingly clean. On mine, there is a moulded plastic cover over the diff. All the oil running out when you pull the filter hits the cover and is channeled very nicely off the front rather than running all over the axle and diff. It's actually not that messy at all.

Houlster what year is your Expedition? What is your engine code? I a 1998 4.6 windsor engine and believe me there isn't enough room for a oil filter. Using a remote oil filter location was the only way to remedy the problem due to the close tolerences. And when it came time to replace the hose assembly I took it to the dealer who had to remove the front axle in order to remove engine mounted end of the hose assembly. If the dealer had to remove the front axle what does that tell you about how much space there is between front axle differential and the location for the oil filter?

Leak,
Just fix the hose, you can buy brass barbs and hose really cheap, use two adel worm clamps facing 180 degrees from each other. Also if you really wanted to get fancy a hydraulic shop could make your hose for about 20 bucks.

That is what I did, I went and got some barbed ends and piece of hose. clamped it up and put a bead on the cut off end of the leaking fitting. More hose clamps and done deal. I think the difference in the amount of space is the difference in Engines. Mine is a 5.4L, I don't know what a 4.6L would look like in there nor how the hoses mount. I like the plastic drain diverter Idea, too bad GM didn't do that with there 5L's on the 4wheel drive trucks, I had a 96 that pissed all over the pumkin when you removed the filter. Thanks guys!

Remote oil filter?

I'm guessing this remote oil filter is only on 4wd? older or newer than 03's?
I've got an 03/EB/5.4/2WD with the plastic diverter. I lay a rag on that diverter and have mastered reaching in from the front of the truck to remove the filter. Not much oil drips and the rag soaks it up. Put the new one in the same way, remove the rag, run a clean rag over the diverter and done. 5min max.
Just curious, haven't been on in a while and am just hearing about these remote oil filters. Maybe older or newer models?? Someone let me know just so I can say I know what they are talking about!
Thanks!

Mine's an '01 w/ 5.4. The 4.6 and 5.4 blocks I thought were the same externally. Dunno why yours doesn't have room and the 5.4's do.

ummmm double post?????? you posted the same exact post with a slightly altered title 2 minutes apart.... I think 1 thread would have sufficed really IMO. I know this doesn't help but just posting the obvious really.

Edit*** just realized both threads are like 2 years old and probably random happenstance they got resurrected. Little tired from graves so excuse me for the bluntness lol.
