V10 Stalls - No Warning
2001 F350 (4x4) SRW, Supercab, long bed, automatic, V10. Engine just stalls without warning. No idoit lights, all gauges indicating normal. Has happened twice in the last few months. First time it had been running only for a few minutes in the winter, second time it had been running for 6 hours a couple of weeks ago. Both times I was just sitting stopped in traffic. All electric itmes still worked (radio, lights, etc.). Turned key and started right back up. Had it to the dealer yesterday, showed no codes, no TSB's, nothing...$90 thank you. They wanted to keep it for another day or two for further dignostics (guessing) at $90/hr. Any thoughts what it might be?
Thanks in advance. |
Does it really stumble first, and THEN die? or just cut out like a switch was thrown?
When you say "turned key" did you turn it OFF and then back to ON/START? Or go right from ON to START? |
It just quit, no stumble - nothing - smooth as silk. I do not realy remember but I think both times I turned the ignition off and then re-started it, didn't just try to restart it from the "ignition on" position. The second time I had the radio playing, and did not even realize that the motor had stalled until I tried to accelerate (when nothing happened). I was in traffic 5 lanes wide at a toll booth in NJ, with an 8500# 5TH wheel behind me. Had a little bead of sweat form on my brow.

If it stalled w/out a stumble it's electronics related. I would guess a Cam Shaft or CrankShaft Position Sensor. I had this problem forever in a Camaro. It died all of a sudden one day and didn't happen again for a couple months....the longer i ignored it ....it would die about every 100-300 yards of driving. This starts off rare and easy but will worsen and sometimes not start for long periods of time and cause shorting damage to the ECU/ICM possibly. My f250 v-10 stalled on me twice when off-roading but had alot of load on the motor.....didn't care anything about it as the motor has been replaced. -GOOD LUCK !

Could be a dirty fuel injector...happened in an 1986 Chrysler I had. Ran smoothly until a piece of trash clogged the jet, engine would die, piece of trash would fall from jet and car would start right up. Might run for days after that or do it again immediately. Worth a shot!

Jim I'd love to know if you have to power cycle it before it starts. I'd also check the ECM fuse, grounds and other things. Doesn't cost anything if you're doing it yourself... |
Moved to V10 forum. Too few replies in 4 days. Hope this helps ;)

are you still having problems scottay or did you get her fixed ?
|
No I have not had time to do anything with it yet. Work just got crazy. I may fool around with it this sunday. Willl post if anything is found. Its also tough to diagnose because I cant reproduce the problem. Its only occured twice in the past 6 months or so.
Just a note: This is a cool website. Alot of usefull info can be found here. |
after installing a powwer module in my computer my started doing the same thing. it seemed like it was related to rainy weather . after the same wasted $$ with the ford "techs" , i found that my computer was not seated all the way into the large port through the fire wall. that was 3 years ago since repair and no problems since.

My '01 f350 v10 did the same thing about once every 3 months. Now I have a '02 f250 v10 and it's done it to me twice in 7 months, almost same story as Scottay. It will fire back up w/o turning the key back to 'off'. It hasn't happened enough to concern me yet, but I'm glad to know I'm not the only one!

do your self a favor before going wild change the fuel filter v10's don't seem to like clogging up ones and use only a motor craft no walleyworld types. then let us know some more like mileage and how you drive. as you just may be having a fuel problem. not electrical as you say no codes.
|
IAC maybe??
|
I will replace the fuel filter, if for any reason, a maintenance issue. At the risk of being naive, what is the IAC and what does it control?
|
it's called the idle air control valve and after time they tend to stick. esp. when the throttle body carbons up. with that i would take the tb off and with a can of choke/carb cleaner clean all the black crude out and off it .
