'60 292 oil pump leaking...
 

The pump has been leaking between the bottom plate with the 4 bolts and the pump housing. Pump should only have 12,000 miles or so. Good pressure. Took it apart to find the "O" ring type seal installed wrong, flattened in one section. Is it possible to get that seal? No one local can find any reference to it. If I can buy it, where and price if you know or has anyone found another solution?

they used to be able to make up an o ring for you.just cut the lenght you want and glue the ends together.i had one made for a 56 torque converter and it didnt leak.

Thanks. Looks like a new pump will be the only way to get it in the local area. Places here say "huh" when talked to about making an "O" ring. Oh well.

A couple of options:

1) Try a dedicated bearing & seal distributor, if you have one locally. They can usually get/make/find anything.

2) E-mail Melling & see if they can get you one, or give the std. number for it. If you can get the #, see #1 above.

3) One possibility that may work is to get an O-ring of a larger size, very carefully cut it to an exact fit, install it with a tiny, & I do mean tiny, amount of high-temp RTV at the splice, making certain none squeezes into the pump. I've done this before on other parts with no ill effects.

4) If all else fails, rather than buy a new pump, get the rebuild kit, which has (or had) the seal in it, & is somewhat cheaper.

5) I may be able to get the number from Melling through an acquaintance who does business with them, but it might take a few days. Lemme know if you have no luck.

O Ring
 

Go to an equipment dealer like John Deere or Cat. They have O ring assortments & can order what size you need . Most places that make hyd hose can also fix you up. I use super glue to make my hard to get o rings , cut the ends on a 45 degree , clean & glue, works every time.

This is just an FYI. I had a new 292 oil pump leaking at the plate/body junction. It was a rotor type pump. The pumps have a very thin amount of material between the bolt holes holding the plate on, and the groove for the o-ring. Found that there was a flaw in the plate casting, and one of the bolt holes didnt have any material between it and the groove, and the result was the o-ring blowing out. It was quite a stream of oil draining on the floor.
