Need help with replacing Driven Gear
 

I'd appreciate any help any of you could provide regarding changing the driven gear in a 1989 Ford F150, 4x4 with Borg-Warner 4 sp trans. and borg-warner transfer case.

I've located where the spedometer connects to the transfer case and was able to remove the cable and speed sensor but couldn't get the driven gear out. There appears to be some sort of retaining ring. Is this ring threaded in or does it just pop loose? Once removed will I be able to get the driven gear out? Any help would be appreciated.

Your speed sensor assembly has broken in half.
The metal ring you see inside the transfer case held the body of the speed sensor together.

Use needle nose pliers and pull the metal ring straight out. You'll find the barrel/nose of the speed sensor assembly with the driven gear still attached to it by a cir clip.

Download this PDF. Scroll down to page 416 and look at figure 18 which is a picture of what the speed sensor should look like. It takes a while to download so be patient.

The catalog also shows Tomco's part number along with the Ford part number for the speed sensor.

F150xlt Thanks a bunch. I wanted to know exactly what I was dealing before I started pulling on anything and take the chance of breaking something off in the transfer case.

I also had that problem. I found it that turning it while pulling made it easier.
