Head Gasket Blown, Overheated
Hi,
My daughter let her coolant reservoir run dry. Kept driving the Explorer with engine light on and check gauges. She made it to Canadian Tire, they tell her head gasket blown spewing coolant all over engine, no surprise. They went on to say, they think main bearings gone and want to replace. I told them do not do anything and I will get Explore Towed from there. Is this possible to score the main bearing and to determine, without teardown. Can anyone answer and know of any good reasonable cost shops or bcakyard mechanics? We are in SW Calgary. It is a 2000 Explore with the 6 Cylinder engine. Thanks, geezerglide |
If you can afford it put a new motor in it. Then sell it, buy your daughther a bus pass & a kick in the bottom!

Welcome to FTE !!!
Look up Carline Mufflers in SE Caqlgary. They're near Marlboro Ford. They were a real friendly bunch when I was there in `95,96,97 & 2000 and they have a huge parts department.
AL. :-wink |
The Tech question is better asked in the tech forums.
The Calgary Mechanic In the SW question is tough to answer as the places I knew have been torn down to facilitate roads & buildings. Which Canadian Tire ? ....Mcleod Trail or....... Richmond Road & 50st The Backyard guys I have lost track of. and my *Major work* Mechanic is in Red Deer. Oh and ...He means Marlborough Ford which is a long way away from you. Dealford's been smokin again ;) |
the best thing you could have done is getting the unit away from those incompotent crooked parts salesman at canadian tire. a second opinion is DEFINATLY needed. i would buy new shoes and walk before letting those "mechanics" anywhere near my vehicle.

You don't "think" main bearings are gone, if they are toast you will know it, but yeah at least a ford dealer will be a much better place to take it, but as far as good shops and what not can't help you to much there.
