Question for anybody in Virginia.

Does anybody know the regulations on exhaust for a '76 150 Ranger, in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 /><st1:State><ST1:pVirginia.</st1:State>
<st1:State></ST1:p</st1:State>(such as having to put cats or a muffler)

for a friend that has until march 15 to do something with his exhaust

well i have the same truck and live in VA. dont need cats, aint sure about a muffler though. most likely yes.

Franken-Truck 02-28-2006 07:43 PM

Mufflers yes, and it can't leak at all. And you have to have the exhuast oulet past the rear of the cab. I doubt it needs CAT's, even if it did I seriously doubt anyone would say anything about it being the fact its old as a mug :-X22

Actually...you can pass an inspection without a muffler...but the cops can still give you a ticket for no muffler.

Kinda ironic if ya ask me....

Try this link on inspections. http.//www.vsp.state.va.us/safety.htm#virginia

Muffler required. There's a provision about no "straight-through" exhaust systems. I got hassled about having cheap glasspacks.

[hijack=Franken-Truck]I tried the no muffler thing for a while, decided I like my hearing :-X22 [/hijack]

i have no cat on my truck and passed the sniffer test... it's an 87 150 with a straight six and a flowmaster..

just get classic plates for it, 25 years and older don't need an inspection for safety or emmisions.. you can do basically everything, but you aren't supposed to use it as a daily driver. i did it with my 77 civic..

:-D

Just becareful where you drive. Homey don't play dat game around here. They'll track your movements till they get enough to snag yah }>

A muffler is required however some owners may interpret or argue that as any muffling device. In such an instance a turbocharger is a muffling device and could substitute for a standard muffler. Therefore a turbodiesel can have straight pipes.

I for one wouldn't debate that point with an inspection station or a trooper. He might just get a little annoyed should he decide it is willful disobedience of the law. Like being caught racing vs. simple speeding.
