turbo questions on a 01 7.3
I just picked up a 01 7.3 250 superduty. 61k on the clock, 6 spd manual and 4x4. It drives great, But am I wrong here. I do not hear the turbo at all.
I have been trying to search around for hints on what to look for but not really coming up with anything. |
Best thing to listen for is what some call a "whistle" from the engine compartment while driving, or the same "whistle" from the exaust pipe. If this does not answer your question I am sure there are more experienced others here who can explain this more in depth.

Also the factory intake wheel doesn't really whistle like you would expect a turbo to sound like. It sounds more like Darth Vader after a 200 yard sprint. https://www.ford-trucks.com/user_gal...oid=80648&.jpg https://www.ford-trucks.com/user_gal...oid=91896&.jpg |
Hey Kwik, you got a new pict this mornin, right on. ! Yup my guages are inroute as we speak, I did my 4" exhaust last year, the 6637 air cleaner this week and ccv mod too. Ordered a SSXover pipe last week also. Yaw, I think I'll be able to hear my turbo next week when I pull my 32' Prowler. Oh yaw, almost forgot I also got the Evolution a couple of weeks ago (middle setting)and boy did it wake up this detuned 7.3. I love it even more now.
3 CALLS IS ALL I GOT TO SAY, NUFF SAID!!!!!!!!!!! |
Is it as slow? It would be pretty darn slow w/o any boost...
You can kind-of see it in this picture in the background: http://www.mrtruck.net/54-10061large.jpg It is labeled Garrett and is right above/behind the engine. The pipe that comes off the air filter/airbox is connected to it also... |
I would not say it is slow. I can cruise up mountain roads empty with 5 passengers in the cab in overdrive. I am just wondering since i do not hear the turbo any.
There is a garrett turbo hooked up right next to the firewall. |

yes that is the truth. well put. it is amazing how restrictive the intake and exhaust are, because once you change to a freer-flowing one, you hear lots of odd noises (especially from the intake) and you wonder WTF was that!!!!??? it is all normal, and i have come to love them all. that is what keeps me hooked on this "sport". |
Well those are both things I would like to do one day. But those will come after the pyrometer and boost guage.

I have a 2003 7.3 CC all stock non cat..I can hear the turbo just fine...Mostly exhaust sound as the engine bay has the hood/firewall insulation...I like the sound of the turbo when in cruise control at around 65-70 when you get to a slight hill and the turbo starts to spool up ....
