Glasspacks on your mod V8?
 

Has anyone put a set or a single long glasspack on your modular V8? I read in a Hot Rod muffler test article probably 15 years ago that performance was similar or better than Flowmasters, SuperTrapps, and turbo mufflers, but they didn't last as long, and a lot of folks don't like the sound. I do like the sound of long glasspacks, and I seems like a set would be pretty cool for nostalgia sake.

Well with the stock cats, you're not gonna get the good ol sound you're looking for. As a matter of fact you'll come closer with a straight pipe. But on the one I have now, I gutted the cats and put a glasspack on it, and yes it sounds just like the good ol days except no back fire hickups.

BTW- I know I'm old and all, but If I were keeping this truck, theres no way I'd leave that thing on it. I mean it sounds nice n all but after about 100 miles on the freeway I'd be ready ta shove a banana up my own tail pipe. http://images.ford-trucks.com/forums...es2/spanka.gif

When I bought my 2000 F150, 4X4, 5 Speed with 4.6 one year ago, it already had dual glass packs but dual cats were still in place. It sounds pretty good to me although it is pretty loud. I am 56 years old so it reminds me very much of the sixties with dual burned out glasspacks and no crossover. I expect that my glasspacks are pretty burned out by now.

Many tests that I have read over the years indicate that glasspacks don't flow as well as performance mufflers such as flowmasters or good turbo mufflers.

Thanks for the replies. Daddy had 30-in glasspacks on his '77 Ford F-150, and I always liked the way it sounded. I put a Super Turbo on my 4.6L and while I didn't want it loud, it's not much louder than stock when you get on it, and at idle, I can't tell a difference.

I have done alot of research too, and alot of guys still like the glasspack sound, but from what I gather from alot of guys in the exhaust forum, they simply dont perform as well as the flowmasters and those kind. I am guessing they outperform a stock muffler by alot though!

I installed dual glass packs on my 99 F-250 4.6L and I still get a crackle at higher RPM's or coming down hills. The Cherry Bomb glass pack's have lasted 2 years this far, and not much differance in sound yet.

I had my cats taken off and put true duals with 12in glasspacks and it sounds awesome, a good deep tone, but really lets loose when you get on it, no annoying crackle, but the tone and decible level will set car alarms off

Mine does have a crackle to it and I'm really not sure what I'm going to do with them but I know that I won't leave them on there forever. In addition to the glasspacks there are some 3" by 18" chrome plated extensions at an angle from the inside sweeping sideways and they are starting to get a little rusty.

The problem is that the glasspacks are mounted side by side on the passenger side between driveshaft and frame rail. I have not looked to see where else mufflers can be mounted, but I expect that I will ultimately put on a pair of flowmasters and change the tailpipes around somehow.

They're fine for now though and I don't mind the crackle too much. The whole thing beats a stock exhaust IMHO.
