4.6 liter noise

Has anyone had any tapping noise in their 05 or 06 4.6 liter eigine

I was told by dealer it may be valve lash adjusters can this be so

Does it sound like the right side? I have the same noise in mine only when it is cold but after running for a few minutes, then it goes away. Although I have the 5.4. I noticed it at 18,000 miles and I now have 45,000 miles with no change. Dealer said it was normal, I don't believe that. I have been told it could be a cam phaser.

the 4.6 does not have a cam phaser. is the noise only on startup?

Tobydog 01-22-2006 06:36 AM

Thanks for the reply

Thats what I found out (no phasre) anyway I dont hear it on startup its only after its warmed up and only at an idle. I went bact to dealer he told me it may be the lash adjusters and to make an appointment to have their engine mech. look at it to see if he can pin point the noise.

My '03 4.6 Expedition has a tapping noise from the exhaust manifold and valve cover area at cylinders 7 & 8. It only starts after engine is ran for about 5 minutes, and only at idle.

I have drove myself crazy trying to find the source. I even took the valve cover off and ran it, but every lash adjuster and rocker sounded the same with the stethescope. There is a TSB out for head noise on the "04 and back. One of the fixes is to change the head because of valve guide problems.

My dealer has asked Ford for after warranty adjustment for the repair, whatever it may turn out to be. I will soon be getting my shop appointment, as I just know Ford will step right up and repair this noise. :-roll

If you find your problem please post here and let me know. I am out of warranty, spent all my money buying this thing last fall, then it starts ticking.

I can't trade it because sometimes it knocks so loud you can hear it 30 feet away, plus I don't want to stick someone else with the noise.

On the good side, it does not seem to affect the power or running.

Hey Yardbird thanks for the reply, my tapping goes away as soon as i step on the gas, I beleive it is a lash adjuster that maby drops its oil pressure some at idle. I only have 3500 miles on my truck and i think i am going to drive it more and see what happens after i get more miles on it. I got the extended warrenty for 100,000 miles so if it blows ,oh well it will cost me 100 bucks to fix and ford will eat the rest.

my 03 expy has a ticking to it. i really noticed it the day after i bought it. It really sounds like a loose valvetrain. However i have rulled that out. it turned out it was loud injectors.

Mine is just like yours, goes away as soon as you step on the gas. I listened to all the lash adjusters with the stethescope while the valve cover was off. They all were quiet, so were the rockers. It sounded like it was coming from within the manifold end of the head.

It is loudest from the exhaust manifild itself and the pipe going down to the cat. There is no noise at all from the block or bearings.

Thanks guys like I said I am going to put more miles on it and see what goes, I had a 2000 F-150 with 149,000 on it when I traded it in for this 06 and it gave me no problems but it hae a 4.2 V6. I drive 104 miles a day just to go to work and they are 95% highway so the type of driving is the best thing for it. who knows maby i am not broke in good yet and that noise may go away. If so I will post it and let you guys know.

My 04 F150 with the 5.4L has a little tick also. I just bought it and the truck still has warranty, so I am going to have it looked at before the 36000 mark. The tick on mine I first thought was the injectors, but then I crawled under the truck when it was running and it sounds like its comming from the back of the motor right around the bellhousing somewhere?? I can't figure it out... So sometime this summer once things slow down alittle bit I am going to take it to the dealership. Until then, I am just going to drive the piss out of it :) :-X22

Sounds like the same noise mine has in the same area. I have the same year and engine. Loud on the passenger side after start-up @ idle. Tick noise noticeable underneath, can't hear much of it on top of the engine with all the injector noise. After a few minutes when it gets warmed up, noise quiets down then goes away. Keep us informed if you take it back to the dealer and they actually find a cause. Mine is out of warranty now, so the more info the better. You might want to get into the shop as soon as you can, I waited untill 34000 miles, they told me it was normal, but if I sell this truck, I can't tell the next guy that.
Thanks

Thats what I say its under warrenty let ford pay for it when it breaks

ford390gashog 01-22-2006 08:59 PM

when you bought the extended warranty you got the ford warranty and not the third party one right? if not you may be in for a shock when 36,000 miles hits and they refuse the work. plenty of ford dealerships sell both the ford and the third party warranty. but they push the third party, because its under 2,500.00 the ofrd warranty is almost 4,500.00.
