Hi guys,

I recently acquired a holley elecctric fuel pump, which I have mounted to the inside of the frame back by the gas tank. It is grounded to the chassis, and the positive is run up to a switch in the cab. This works fine provided I remember to flip the switch, and it's a nice theft deterrent.

However, I'd like the thing to come on automatically when I turn on the ignition. I may keep the switch in there somewhere, as a kill switch too.

Which circuit should I hook it up to? Where do I connect it? My stereo is jury rigged with positive leads stuck between the fuse and the contact in the fuse box. I'd like the fuel pump to be something more reliable.

There are some wiring harnesses lying empty under the hood, but I have no idea what they are for.

Is a relay called for?

Holley makes a neat fuel pump switch that screws into your motor's oil pressure gauge feed [Holley # 12-810]that has 1 wire to the pump,1 wire to ignition and 1 wire to starter solenoid.If your oil pressure gets too low,the fuel pump wont run.You don't need a relay with this unit,either.

When I hooked up my fuel pump, I just ran the hot wire through the firewall and hooked it up to one of the fuses on the fuse panel. The fuel pump only comes on when you turn on the ignition.

Another nice thing about that Holley safety shut-off switch is that if you forget the ignition switch "on" with the motor not running,the fuel pump doesn't run.I saw a motor with over 5 gallons of gas in the crankcase because the owner's girlfriend was listening to the stereo and the electric fuel pump was pushing gas past the carb needle and seat. The Holley number is 12-810

That Holley product sounds like a great deal. I'm going to look into it for my set-up. However, if you don't want to spend the extra bucks, there should be a couple of "male" posts within your fuse box that are switched by the ignition. All you would have to do is run a wire from the pump to the fuse box and crimp on a "female" plug to slip over the post.

the pump I'm using now I got for free, so I'd like to stick with that... I will look for those positive posts, I don't remember seeing them before.

[font size="1" color="#FF0000"]LAST EDITED ON 10-Oct-01 AT 11:32 PM (EST)[/font][p]The fuse block is mounted on the firewall kind of down by the parking brake, it has those little glass round fuses. The fuse I used and haven't had any trouble with is the 2ed to last fuse on the top row. I think it is a 30 or 35 amp fuse. Make sure you hook it up to the bottom of the fuse, otherwise if you get a short and the fuse blows there will still be current going to the fuel pump. One other thing, if you just want to listen to the radio and don't need the fuel pump on, turn the key to the left (accessory). I don't think you have to worry about accidently leaving the ignition on with the engine off because you can hear that damb thing humming a mile away. Hope this helps and good luck.

i used the harnes under hood on driver side comong out of fire wall used test light to see if power came on and off with key it did i also had it on togle switch but scared me the first time i forgot to turn it off

nothing like dragging up a 9yr old thread.

PLEASE USE THE SAFETY SWITCH listed above it is for your safety.

If something happens, accident and you can't turn the key off the motor most likely would have stalled, stop running and so would the pump.
Now let's say it is wire to the key, pump keeps pumping and if gas should spray onto something hot we now have a fire.

That is one way to ruin your day.

The other way to ruin your day is having the wiring via a stated 30-35 amp fuse. (Funny how Holley went to the trouble of giving a fuse rating in the pump instructions !)

I'm glad the posters of posts 4,6,7,8,9 and 12 aren't working on my truck. :-arrgh

Stupid, lazy dangerous sh$t like this annoys me.
