91 A4LD front pump seal took a dump
Hey all
Got a question tor the tranny experts. During a 250 mile drive home last night, the front pump seal on my tranny let loose and dropped about a quart of ATF then stopped leaking for a while. Managed to get the beast home (another 100 miles or so) with no problems. Thing shifts just fine in all gears, converter lock-up works OK, no slipping or other problems. The trans is about 2 1/2 years (25 K miles) since total overhaul and new-process converter, fluid and filter changed about a year ago. Fluid color is a bit off, but not burnt so much as I can tell. Any suggestions as to how I should proceed? Should I drop the tranny and replace the seal or was this just "one of those things that happens for no apparent reason"? It does not appear to be leaking any more (but hard to tell with oil everywhere under there). Dialtone |
Rest assured, everything in life happens for a reason. I recall a few posts about the front seals on these. Something about the fit of a machined boss being off. Try a search, I'm sure you'll find something.

if the seal is blown out you will need a new front bushing in the pump and poss.a converter
