multiple carbs
 
can anyone tell me or refer me to more info or books on general theory, set up etc on multiple carb set ups? Not shure on motor or the like just info. Looking at pictures of three duces is just too tempting. thanks

Multi Carb and done on quite a few motors.. best if U have a motor in mind 1st. so U can get the best info for your needs.. IE: My 223 was running 3 5210 Holley carbs nicly..

One of the Rod magazines did an article on this within the last few months. I'll research it when I'm home tonight and post an answer.

Your wisdom stands you in good stead, sir. Nothing like 3 deuces for coolness. Then again, there is nothing particularily hard or easy about them. Set up with progressive linkage you end up with what is essentially a 6 barrel.

Edelbrock still makes manifolds for some applications... most likely sbc's. You can find setups for y-blocks or olds and others on ebay or vendors. There have been some pretty thorough articles on holley 94's recently on the HAMB and in one of the rodder type mags. These are what Ford guys are likely to use if they can't afford Strombergs.

My adventure with the 3 deuces riding on my y-block has taken me through some interesting turns... like road draft tubes and distributors, tapping for vacuum and tuning. One thing stands out... wife accused me of "doing something to make my truck louder"... and that is one noticeable effect of going to 3 carbs. It does make that hotrod rumble a notch or two higher on the volume meter.

There really isn't that much to generalize about. Even the publications that focus on fuel setups spend little time with this type of carburation. If you get into it you will always have something to add to a conversation that is just a bit different from your 4 barrel friends. Jump in. It's a gas.

Tri power is high in cool factor, biggest problem is finding a set of useable carbs you can afford! Most have been worn out well beyond repair even IF you can find repair parts. Someone has just started reproducing the 94's, but you'd better have deep pockets... :D
Once you have a manifold for the engine of choice, a good set of original tripower carbs or a collection of three matched two barrels to modify that fit the manifold, a set of progressive linkage for said carbs (DON'T even think or trying to run straight linkage unless you have a lot of experience and a highly modified engine), the actual installation is easy, and tuning isn't much more difficult than using one carb.

They are reproducing 97's at about 300 a pop. Stromberg's have a slight coolness edge on 94's, though many of us don't know why. Our 3 deuce guru is 286Merc. You can feel comfortable getting into this knowing he's got the answers.

Sorry I meant 97s Case of OACRS! I haven't even SEEN a Stromberg in > 30 years, but then most of the current generation haven't even seen a carburator! :D
The multicarb article was in Street Rodder in one of the last few issues IIRC.

The article in Street Rodder was in two parts, July and August 05. July's article was general info, what's available and who makes it, etc. August's article has more tech info like tuning and linkage setup. Back issues should be available, or maybe it's on their website.

The idea of a performance I6 sounds interesting, I would be interested in a 3x2 set-up but 223 parts seem rare. Summit racing sells a 3x2 set up for a 57' 223, is this basically the same motor in my 54'? I've seen headers for a 223, would the 3x2 with headers be a good start?

the 223 for 54 - 60 are all the basic block.. All parts will interchange.. When I was looking for a tri power intake for mine I ended up getting a Offy Tripower intake for a 57-59 223.. I have a 1960.. When I call and ask they just siad it wouldnt fix becouse of hood clearence.. heck with the tripower and carb adaptors and 3 5210 2bbls carbs this leave 9in of clearence still.. there even a tripower for the 54-56 223.. Hope this helps

Cost Vs. Performance
 
What are your thoughts regarding this kind of set-up? Do you really get more performance out of the 3 carbs to justify the (est.) $600 investment. Granted it looks cool, but what is the actual payoff (ballpark estimate)?

$400 for one carb, man those must be beauties. I was thinking you could put 3 Holley 1 barrels on there, is that a foolish thought? What kind of money would this set up actually cost an a 223 with the linkage, carbs and intake?

I'm not so sure that any single change to a "set-up" would have a measureable payoff. You can still buy Holley 94 types (2100 -2110's) at NAPA for about 150+ bucks. The payoff is the bigger punch you get from the nominal six barrel as compared to a four barrel. How much punch? This would depend on the rest of your setup... cam, exhaust, ignition, and the way you are geared, suspended, tired, etc.

I like the big punch. It's cool. Is my truck fast? No. But it's fun. If I wanted fast I'd build a fast car.

Not quite that much.. Here a break down on what it cost me

Offy intake $211.53

Carb Adaptors $15 ea X 3

Holley 5210 Carb @ $75 ea X 3 ( Call for info 1-586-739-9601 )

and that was it..

As I recall, Strombergs had easy to get at replaceable jets which could flow a wide range of fuel which made tuning a lot easier as well as good draw when used in multiple configs, and at the time were pretty plentiful. They were also quite compact with the fuel inlet and linkage on the same side.
Just saw in Street Rodder an ad for 3x2 Flattie manifolds as well as a company that is making EFI units that resemble 97's and bolt to the old manifolds.

On the other hand, when a float valve would stick hammering on the top of the bowl would free the valve. Enough hammering would warp the top and the leaking commenced. The very visible accelerator pump shaft and linkage in operation with the rest of the moving parts is visually cool.

For my money, I'll take the simpler, more efficient '94 and its cousins. I have some really rough old Strombergs that I'll put on the dream rod when it comes, just for the coolness factor.

GOOD Strombergs are getting very rare, the butterfly shafts would wear and start leaking and the butterflys themselves would wear into the venturi making the engine run rough. There used to be oversized shafts available, but parts suppliers stopped making parts for them 30 or so years ago.
