tachometer problems

Today I started my bronco and the tach jumped up to 2000 and stayed there. I revved the engine, drove it home, and nothing changed... it just sat at two. I did notice that if I really "floor it" the needle will move slightly down (maybe an 1/8"). Any ideas or suggestions?

Is it a aftermarket tach or a factory one?

tach problems

This is a 96 with a 5.8L engine. As far as I know this is all factory. It has about 95,000 miles on it... I just bought it last week. It did have a power window motor go out on it a few days ago. I replaced the motor and have since noticed the tach. I don't think they are related... Any help would be great. Thanks!

Can anyone help me with this???

I would first check all the fuses including the ones under teh hood and make sure all are fine.

Then the next step would be to pull the cluster and check for any loose connections. Also check teh sender for the tach. A haynes manual wil be able to tell you where the sender is located. I cant remember off the top of my head.

Your last resort would be to install a new cluster. Which can be tricky finding one with the same miles your truck currently has. A ford dealer can order one with your exact miles but it costs about $450

Hope this helps/

Tach Problems

I thought it was possible to pull the cluster and then seperate it. Can't I just pull the tach from the rest of the cluster and replace that? I'll check the fuses tonight and hopefully that is all. Thanks!

I checked the fuses today and didn't find anything. Does that pretty much leave me at the gauge itself?
