ABS light
Nothing new here, just an ABS light that won't go out. I have read through all the ABS posts and am still perplexed. 1987 F-150, 302, 2WD, auto. Here's what happens: turn vehicle on, light comes on for a couple of seconds, then goes out for a couple of seconds, then comes on and stays on. I hear a little click when the light goes out. I have replaced the speed sensor with a new one from Ford, I have checked the wiring from the speed sensor, and have checked the wiring at the master cylinder. When I ground the black/orange wire, I get no codes. The light does not flash, it is just on. All other lights are OK. I have read in other posts that the black/orange wire connects to a red wire. I don't seem to have such a red wire. My black/orange is just hanging out there by itself. Could this be causing my light to stay on? Where the hell is this red wire? Where does it go? Where has it gone? Also, coming out from the side of the truck, next to the emergency brake, is a lt.blue/black wire that looks like some test connection. Any clue what this is? Thanks for any help. Phantom lights really put me over the edge.

Go to the local library and see if you can get some wiring diagrams from the alldata database for your truck. That way, you can start chasing down where the wires go, and if anything is missing.

i had the same problem in the farms utility truck i just took the bulb out it doesnt seem to hurt anything

That's kinda what I thought would ultimately happen. Not crazy about chasing wires, though, and just ignoring it goes against my grain. It seems that the ABS light is just one of those things Ford really doesn't have a clue on. The quest continues . . . .

Just out of curiosity, have you recently changed any of your light bulbs? I'm talking the rear brake lights or anything like that? The reason I ask is that I put in some of those new LED light bulbs in the rear of my truck for the brake/signal lights. Within 30 seconds of putting in the new bulbs the ABS light came on in the dash and would not go out until I put the old 1155's back in. I guess the LED bulbs use so much less current the ABS sensor thought that something was amiss and set off the dash light. Just a thought in case you had changed or added any kind of bulbs or wiring to the brake light circuits.

MRL123 there is a resistor that you can place inline with the LED bulbs that will solve that problem..

Hey Jack01 - Thanks for the info. - good to know these things in case I decide to reinstall the LED jobs.
Cheers! Mike |
Nope, haven't replaced any bulbs. Good info, though.

Here, some of this might be helpful to you... happy squinting :D

frederic, it says those files are restricted.
|
Yeah, I just deleted the .htaccess file that controlled access. Sorry about that. I'm an absent-minded web administrator :D

Well, frederic, I saw em while they were up there, but, alas, to no avail. What I don't understand is why I can't get any codes. And I am still perplexed by the whole test connection thing (BTW, the test connector on the '87 is near the emergency brake, not by the glove box). Anywho, I've about decided to just take the bulb out or place some elec. tape over the damn thing.

See my latest post on this subject - if you have the red brake light showing or turn the ignition off while the abs light is showing it will clear the codes; extract the codes before turning off ignition with a good momentary ground to the diagnostic lead. apparently there was a good deal of change to this system over the first years - my info is from 88 shop manual It also says there are some conditions that set ABS light but not codes?? Diagnostics go tochecking brake master cyl electrical connector for float switch, checking 20A RABS fuse, wiring and power to module.
Post back if you have some new info. |
I did what you suggested, 95X15, but got no codes. The damn light just stays on, taunting me. I'm of to buy some electrical tape.

Says next step is to go to the master cylinder electrical conn on side of MC disconnect it and then make sure it is properly connected; next remove and inspect 20 A RABS fuse, make sure it is good. If this checks out look for shorts to ground in lead 603 Dark Green lead. If not look for shorts in lead 601 lightblue/pink wire (with ignition on remove connector from RABS module (in center of dash underside slightly on driver's side) if light stays on lead is shorted).
Check for 12 v power at pin no 1 and 9 of RABS conn to ground. You can also make a quick check of power by checking for power at each of the purple/white leads at the master cylinder fluid level switch connector with it installed on the MC connector - you should have 12 v on both leads to chassis ground. Keep trying. |
