What model manual tranmissions were used in Big Broncos and what years were the models used ??

My 88 came stock with a Mazda 5 speed, replaced it with a ZF 5 speed.

Whythe change, was it difficult and whatare the pluses?

Not trying to hijack Katmandu's thread, I bought the Bronco with the M50D trans trashed because it was run dry. The ZF was a easy bolt in from a donor F-250 I had.

The positives are, I already had it, it should be stronger, and I turned a three hundred dollar truck destined for the junk yard into a nice little toy.

What's the difference(s) between those trannies ??

What years were they offered in Broncos ??

I don't know the exact differences between the two, but the ZF's were put put behind Ford biggest, high horse engine's.

Maybe the clutch, transmsision, axle section would get better answers to the details.

Actually the ZF transmission was put behind the 5.8, 7.5 and the 7.3 in the F series. It wasnt necessarily the HP that put the ZF in play but the GVWR of the vehicle. It looks like you need to look for a wide ratio ZF because the close ratio was used only for the diesel. According to the manuals I have, it was in the 93 Bronco, 92-96 F150 and 92-97 F250/F350 as a trans code "W". I am sure it was installed earlier than 92 but that is the only manuals I have. It was interesting to note that the manuals only show 1993 for the Bronco, but Ford manuals were always being updated.

The ZF can handle a lot more torque than the M5OD, and it has a granny gear. I believe only F250's and up came with the ZF.

What year did the ZF replace the NP435 ??

The ZF came out in 1988 as a replacement for the T19 tranny in F-250 and up trucks.

It was never offered in a Bronco or F-150. If that's what Ford says, then fine, show me one. I've been reading this forum for years and years and no one's ever seen one.

To answer the original question, you could get a FSB with the 4 speed overdrive tranny (SROD), T18 or NP435. In 1988, they phased in the M5OD, although manual Broncos by that time were rare. You could in theory order an old four speed up until 1992 or so, but I don't think there were very many made, if any at all.

The ZF is way stronger than the M5OD, plus it has a granny gear.

1988 was also the year that Ford introduced the ZF.

Let's see if I got this straight now....

ZFs came behind 351W/5.8L and UP engines starting in 1988 and M5ODs were used in the 300 I6 and 302s. Correct ??

A lot of 300s came with the ZF... it was just F150s and broncos... no matter what engine, and F250s with 5.0Ls that came with the M5s

Unless you have as built numbers and specs, you cannot know that for sure. The ZF was available throughout the full line of the F-series according to the ford manuals and it was "available" with all engine sizes including the I-6. The only difference is that there is a wide ratio for gasoline engines and close ratio for diesels. Stranger things have been built and there could be Broncos (93 for instance according to that year of manual) and F150's built with this trans. The trans door code would be "W" for the wide ratio ZF.

If the ZF was really available as an option (not just on paper, but one could've gone to a Ford dealer and order a Bronco with that) I'm fairly certain there would be a few around. A 351 with a factory ZF would've been a kickass combo.
