Transmission hard shifting

My 01 F250 V10 has suddenly started hard shifting and sometimes taking the RPMs up over 4k when it shifts then drops them back to around 2-3k where it normally drives at.

I have also noticed the OD on/off light flashes when this hard shifting occurs and the only way to stop it from flashing is to stop the truck and turn the key off then start it back up.

The truck hasn't hauled anything in months and only has 30k on it. It is a 4wd superduty. The transmission fluid looks clean and is at the right level.

Any help would be appreciated.

Mike

The flashing OD light means a trouble code was stored in the computer's memory. Take it to someone that can read Ford specific codes. A place like Autozone can't read Ford specific codes, only the codes that turn on the check engine light.

Yup, get the codes reads.

Does your speedometer fluctuate, or the ABS light come on? Could be the speed sensor on the top of the rear-end...

I had a similar problem. I disconnected my battery for a few minutes to reset the brain box. When I reconnected it the problem was gone! It has been more than a year. I have since put a code reader to it and I get a "pending fault" for my MAF sensor. I guess I can rationalize that the transmission uses data from the MAF sensor when determining shift points...Whatever....no check engine light, no tranny light....no problems

Yup, it definitely takes input from the MAF - I recently cleaned mine in my '01 V10, and the tranny now shifts like it did brand new - it was getting a little strange, slipping gears and such, now it's fine.
