P0340 & P1131
 
I have a 1998 Sable with a 3.0 SOC with 111,000 miles. Check engine light came on. Two error codes were present.

Scanner said:
P0340 Camshaft postion sensor A - bank 1 circuit malfunction.
P1131 Fuel Air Metering Control - Manufacture Control

What side is bank 1....firewall or front side?
I can not find P1131 anywhere. What the heck is it?

Check engine light will periodically go on and off. Engine will stall when 1st started then smoothes out. Gas mileage has dropped. Help, and thanks for any info.

I know this forum is for trucks, which i have. But the knowledge here should apply to my sable.

Is your Sable's 3.0L the DOHC (duratec) version or the OHV (vulcan) version?

The P0340 code isn't all that uncommon on the OHV version, in fact here's a thread on the subject:

3.0L OHV CMP Sensor/Synchronizer Issues

The P1131 code means the upstream 02 sensor in Bank 1 is not switching properly, could be a problem with the circuit but more likely the sensor itself is shot. I recently had a P1131 on my Taurus 3.0L vulcan and when I checked the 02 sensor it was in fact mechanically damaged and non-functional.

Bank 1 always contains the #1 cylinder, which means on your Sable it's the side closest to the firewall.

I have the vulcan version 3.0 engine.

I read the thread on the CMP Sensor. Very good information there, i think i will have no problems doing that fix.

Should i replace the O2 sensor for the P1131 problem?
Is this the only O2 sensor this engine has? I'll wait on the O2 sensor until i hear from you. Thanks again, i will let you know how this all turns out.

The reason I feel the 02 sensor is probably bad is that there are no other indicators of a lean condition on that bank or the engine in general, at least based on what you've posted so far. For example, if you had gotten a P0171 (System lean - Bank 1) or something similar to go along with the P1131 code, or if you were experiencing occasional misfires, high idle, or some other signs of a vacuum leak, then I might not be so quick to condemn the 02 sensor itself. But based on my own experience and your description of things, I think that replacing the 02 sensor is not an unreasonable move.

However, that being said, why don't you first replace the CMP sensor (let's hope it's just the sensor and not the synchronizer too), to do that job you will be taking off the cable from the negative battery post anyway, which will erase all the codes. Assuming the CMP repair goes according to plan, then if the P1131 code comes back you'll at least know for sure that it's not related to the CMP issue.

Since you have to remove the upper intake to get at the CMP sensor, you should replace that gasket (a good Fel-Pro cost less than 10 bucks) and you can examine everything a little closer to make sure that there are no other potential sources of air/vacuum leaks.

I agree 100% with you on replacing the CMP Sensor first, and then see if the P1131 returns.

I was not aware that i had to remove the upper intake to get at the CMP sensor. What would the proccedure for that entail?

I am very mechanically talented, so i can follow any instructions that are needed to get the job done. I have to order the CMP sensor from the auto parts store ($41) and it will take 3-4 days for it to come in. Thanks for all your help.

The upper intake is pretty easy to remove, alhough you do have to disconnect several things first.

You can find step-by-step instructions for removing the upper intake on the Autozone website, look under "Repair Info" and then "Vehicle Repair Guides" for your '99 Sable and you should be in good shape.
