what is the wheel bolt pattern on a 56?
 

hello,

I am currently looking for a 56 f-100 to buy. I have a junked out ch**y (shudders) to get rid of that has a nice set of 15" center line auto drag wheels on it (10" and 8").

They are 5 bolt with slotted holes, so they should fit some other applications. If there is a possibility that they would fit the truck (eventually) I will keep the wheels when I get rid of the the car.

Does anyone know for sure what the bolt pattern is?

Ford trucks with a 5 hole pattern are 5 on 5 1/2".

Most chevy cars are 5 on 4 1/2" although some of the larger cars and light trucks are 5 on 5"

The mulit use wheels you have on your chevy car are probably the multi use wheels that will either fit the chevy 5 on 4 1/2" and the Ford/Dodge 5 on 4 3/4" patterns

To measure the pattern, measure from the center of one stud to the far side of the third stud. (I know that sounds confusing, but if you do a quic google search on how to measure wheel patterns you should be able tof ind a diagram)

5 on 5.5. That said I also have a similar question. I'm converting my 52 F2 to 5 hole all the way around when I put in the 9" rear. I have a set of rims from a 96 ch**y PU that are also 5 on 5.5. It seems to me that in the past, the center hole diameter was larger on fords. Anybody know if the rims will fit?

Thanks Bobby. I will definately check before I get rid of the car. You are probably correct though and thats its a smaller hole centers. Steven brought up a good point as well with the center hole. I never even thought about that one.

Steve, You should remeasure your chevy truck wheels as they are probably 5 on 5" not 5 on 5 1/2". The difference in hub sizes are on the 8 hole hubs. The chevy 8 hole pattern is the same as the ford/dodge 8 hole pattern but the center hole is different. The ford/dodge used a different rearend and had a larger hub on the rear full foating axle. Basically they chevy 8 holes will fit the ford/dodge front hubs but not the rears.

There is a similar problem between the chevy 6 hole wheels and the nissan 6 hole wheels...the nissan have larger hubs.

If you are refering to the oblong type slots in those wheels off the C***Y they were designed to fit any application. There should be different washers available for each different bolt pattern. You will probably have to find someone who carries that wheel line and purchase the correct ones for your new application.

Mine are oblong in a radial pattern. I do not know if they go out that far though. The monte carlo they are on now are close to the center of the slot. I will measure the next time I am home to find out. I need to get rid of the junk in my garage.

I beleive the Monta Carlo have the 5 on 4 1/2 pattern as its a mid size car. The larger cars, Impalas, Caprices, wagons ,etc had the larger truck pattern of 5 on 5"

You might keep the wheels anyway, who knows maybe you can do some swapping and trading and find some wheels for the Ford.

What was I thinking?? Of course they are 5 on 5!! Must be monday.

LOL... I know what you mean, I'm still trying to shake out the cobwebs from the weekend. It doesnt help that I probably knocked off a few brain cells over the weekend and that I permanently suffer from rectal-cranial inversion.

Most GM mid-size and even the Corvette use a 5 on 4 3/4" bolt pattern. The Ch++y 1/2T trucks, at least the older ones, used the 5 on 5" pattern. You usually can't swap GM and Ford wheels. On my 56 I use the small Ford pattern, 5 on 4 1/2".

I stand corrected. Thanks, I always get confused between the 5 on 4 1/2 and the 5 on 4 3/4 and who uses what. I can manage to remember the Ford/dodge is the same and chevy is different but I always mix up the sizes.

the center hole could be smaller or larger depending on whether or not the wheel is "hub-centric" or "lug-centric". hub centric refers to the wheel relying on the hub to center the wheel and carry the weight, where the lug centric relies on the lugs to center and carry the weight.

How did you do that? I saw a 56 with the same wheels as my explorer has. I know they are 5 on 4.5, so I wondered how they fit.

I need to go home tomorrow and measure the wheels on the monte.

I have a Volare IFS up front and the Chrysler pattern is the same as the small Ford pattern, 5 on 4.5". On the rear is a 9" Ford and it also has the Ford 5 on 4.5 pattern axles. You can buy 9" rear axles with various bolt patterns. By the way I have a brand new set of Billet Specialties 17"x8", 5 on 4.5" pattern for sale. If anyone is interested email me.
