"F" in F-series?
somebody asked me at a car show today
what the "F" in F-1 was for ? I said FORD they said it was for someting else any ideas? |
I am no expert, but I heard it stood for "farm" originally. Anyone know if I am wrong?
|
Ford sounds the most likely but could also be Farm.

What does the "1", the "100", or the "150" mean? Most of the model names and numbers are meaningless. I would say that the "F" is for Ford.
What is that truck in Canada? It is an M-47. "M" is for Mercury; "47" is for 4700 gross vehicle weight. That name means something. |
The "F" means Ford. The 1 means the 1/2 ton series, F-2, F-3 etc... The F-150 came out in 74 with a slightly heavier GVW. You are correct on the Merc designations, they were bsed on the GVW numbers.

It is pretty kryptic; F-2 means 3/4 ton and F-3 means heavy duty 3/4 ton. Those are arbitrary number assignments.
