abs/brake light?

Not a very good day,I started my 97 f150 scab 4x4 and the abs light along with the park brake light stayed on after the parking brake was released.I haven't had any problems with the brakes before and actually the truck hasn't had alot of use lately because of the gas prices.I topped off the brake fluid and the brake light still remains on,the only thing is that it's brighter when the parking brake is on.The fuses are good and when the key is turned on to the start position the lights will go out for a second or 2 and then you hear the relay click and the lights are back on.Any info on the subject would be so appreciated---Thanks,jeff

I know this is a common problem on these year trucks. Actually happened on mine, well ABS light, not brake light. What you can try is replace the rear ABS sensor on top of the pumpkin, like a $30 part from ford, and real easy to change. I know they go bad often. Try that and let us know.

Since both the BRAKE and ABS lights are on, it is NOT the rear diff sensor. Do NOT buy one or you will be wasting your money.

If you have rear-only (RABS), you can pull the ABS codes by shorting a jumper behind the right side kick panel and watch the ABS light to get the ABS failure code. If you have four-wheel (4WABS) ABS, you must have the codes pulled by an ABS-capable OBD-II scanner. These scanners are not inexpensive and are not at your local parts store so you might have to visit a dealer for diagnosis.

Following any suggestion to start replacing parts is ill-advised, no matter how well-intentioned the advice is. Start by attempting to properly diagnose the fault and see what the diagnostic procedure leads to.

Thanks for the info, did some checks on the plug ins and the lights are currently out.I'm keeping a watchful on this though, something somewhere is not up to par and I'm sure they will be lighted up again. Thanks,Jeff

Replacing the rear speed sensor CAN fix the problem of the Brake and ABS Light Stay On. I just had this happen last night and this morning I replaced the rear speed sensor which corrected the problem. The part cost $25 + tax at Ford.
