When was the first 8.8" made?

Trying to find out more about Ford axles and wondering when the first 8.8 was made and the 9 inch. How do you tell the difference between a 8.8 and D60?

FORD 8.8" was used in the F150 in 1981.
FORD 9" was first made in 1957.

The 8.8 is not nearly as big as a d60. You should be able to tell just by a glance that either is not the other.
