gear swap ?'s
 

I have a lifted 98 F150 2wd with 35's and my stock gears seem to be pretty sluggish after lift was installed. I am an old Mustang guy and in this case for a daily driver I would put in a set of 3:73's but I am not sure which gear would work best in a lifted truck that is going to be my daily driver:confused: . Any help on this would be much appreciatted. Does any one know the stock ratio? My gas mileage has suffered badly since lift was installed It wants to down shift going up hills and I feel a gear would really help out. Thanks

There should be a stamped metal tag on one of your rear diff cover bolts showing the ratio.
You probably have either 3.08 or 3.55.

OK WOW the Stang I had had a 2:73 so I geuss a 3:73 probably wouldnt be worh my time. What ratio are yall running in lifted daily drivers?

For 35" in tires I highly recommend using 4.56 gears.

Is the 4:56 going to be good as a daily driver gear. I dont want to be wound out at 55mph but I definately need a better gear. I have 4:56 gears in a Ranger and it aint worth a dime on the highway but it isnt supposed to be its a racecar.

That depends on what ratio is in it now, auto or manual transmission? Motor size? What transmission do you have (i.e. AODE, E4OD, etc.)? Most transmission's have a different ratio, so if a 4.56 works good for one person, but they have a different transmission (or transfer case to, in a 4x4) than you, you most likely won't have the same results.

With that information we can calculate which gear ratio would be best for you. :-X22

My truck is a 1998 2WD with a 4.6 automatic tranny. I will get under it tonight and see what gear is in it now. I appreciatte all the help. I will look for markings on the tranny to see what kind of tranny it is.

You can get all that info off of your door sticker too.

I am running 4.56's in my truck with 36" Mickey's. Manual trans, 4.6 . It put my truck back to normal driving gear range or myabe a little shorter. My speedo is off about 8 MPH fast. Gas milage came back to normal also.

It looks like this is going to be the right choice I havent had a chance to get the factory gear specs yet. I am not sure if the manual and the automatic on our year models are closely geared. Also my racing Ranger has a c4 so the overdrive will probably make up the difference.

Well I climbed under my truck and the tag shows synthetic oil only on 1 tag the other has 8.8 but no gear ratio. I looked at the door sticker and it doesnt have gear ratio it only shows 18 under axle. My truck was built in 6/98 I dont know if this will help at all but thought Id try. Is there another way to get these #'s?

If under axle it says 18, then you have 3.08 non limited slip. What does it say for transmision?
