What is the largest filter I can use?

In a FL1A application? I want to put a larger filter in my 92 XL all manual. Thanks.

The best bet is to run a FL299 which is 1.5 inches longer and the same in all other respects, but probably a thicker can since it is longer. But the FL299 is expensive at the dealer. I order the Purolator version (L40017) for $6 at Advance Auto and they have it the next day. This particular Purolator has the Motorcraft-style threaded end bypass valve too.

TallPaul is right! Here's a list of larger filters, including the FL-299. I've cut open "virgin" filters and measured the surface area of the filter element. TP did the same with the Purolator, which I don't have on my list... perhaps he'll post it, as well.

Here's the list:

Code:

                        Pleat    #          Element      Surface
                        Depth    Pleats      Width        Area
Motorcraft        FL-299        0.750          64              5.50          528.00
Fram                PH977A        0.656          56              5.69          418.03
Baldwin        BT251        0.750          51              5.38          411.19
Donaldson        P550299        0.625          60              5.00          375.00
Wix            51773        0.688          49              5.13          345.30

For Comparison (standard OEM size):
Motorcraft      FL-1A  0.719      56        3.75        301.88

The thing to remember is that surface area is not all there is to the filtering ability of a filter... the element material is at least as important (if not more).

Thanks for posting your list Big O Dave. I tried to link to the Oil Guy site and it would not work. Here is my Purolator L40017 data (used filter vs Big O Dave's were new) next to Dave's FL-299 data:

Code:

Filter        Pleat  #Pleats  Element  Element
        Depth          Width    Area

FL-299        0.750        64        5.50        528.00
L40017        0.719        66        5.38        511.00

BTW, someone at this site a couple years ago posted that the longer FL299 was spec for IIRC an '89 F850 with 460 V8 (among many other years and models obviously).

I use the L40017 on my motorhome and sometimes on my 300 I6. Not to leave the very good FL1A behind, I am running that on the Aerostar 3.0, which specs a FL400.

Thanks guys for the help. I was considering the filter area, and possibly a little more cooling?
