"Tornado" type devices
 

Whats your feelings on the "tornado" type air intake devices? Do they work? Increased performance? Increased gas mileage?

I have researched the aftermarket air filter systems and decided to stay away, but am still looking for input on the "tornado" type devices. Are they just smoke and mirrors, or do they work?

Anything in the intake track is a restriction. Be it a filter or Tornado etc... The K&N add a little (very little compared to claims) by filtering less, you can find oil study after oil study on the ill effects of these products in high silcia areas. As far as the Tornado is should be lower on your list of performance products. It claims to swirl the air to mix fuel better. This is bad physics. You want nice non turbulant air entering the intake side of the head, and on top if that a modern fuel injected engine sprays the fule directly into the cyclinder when the intake valve is open. There is very little time before combustion to do anything that is why clean fuel injectors are so important to atomize the fuel. Good luck, think of the engine as a big air pump when looking at any aftermarket product, ask yourself how this product will help to pump air faster.

I have a friend that tried the Tornado device and neither one of us could detect a improvement in performance. He also did not notice a improvement in MPG either.

Total SCAM!!!!

When I read the performance claims of these products I ask myself"if there so darn good why haven't the auto makers jumped all over this".I'ts because they don't work.The auto makers went to synthetic oils which might give an extra 0.1 mpg,what would they do for an extra 2 or 3 mpg.WE all know there is a carb out there that will get 60 mpg but they were bought up by the oil companys.I give you lots of credit for asking. Okay, please don't laugh... I'm one of them fools that bought into this MPG improvement... I also tried Bosch +4 which claim something similar, performance and better fuel milage.

The improvement if any is very minimal and I can hardly appreciate them, let alone save any gas money. Both actually cost me money.

You can't blame a guy like me to look for ways to save gas money, but forum like this helps out folks to weigh things based on other user's experience out there before doing something. I just wished I found this forum before I made those moves.

And oh yeah, I also have K&N drop-in filter, the jury is still out if this is any good/better than conventional air-filter, other than the fact that if I decide to stick with it, I don't have to buy another one ever. If I notice that the oil get dirtier than normal (considering I'm considering doing extended oil-change with Synth), then this one goes out too.

This thread appearing yet again just proves that with effective marketing, any one of us could develop and item for automotive use and get rich selling it.

I wonder if the Tornado has a booth at SEMA. Can anybody that goes confirm or refute?

Unfortunately we all are looking for ways to get better MPG's, and more power from the engines these trucks have in them. And with the price gas what it is and going up everyday, someone will always be the one guinea pig for the rest whether the end result be good or bad.

With 11.8 mpg registering on the display for over four years, I stuck one of those tornados in my 00 V10 Excursion last fall, just to see. After a couple of attempts to get it placed exactly where I wanted it, I just left it in and waited. After about a month, the display said 11.9 and then about a month later, it went to 12.0. And that's where it's stayed for the last 6 months. No detectible difference in performance, and not near what they claim for improved mpg on the box, but still, 2 tenths of a mile extra on each gallon. Yippee. You could say that's better than nothing.

I installed a K&N cold air intake on my 03. Increased 30 horsepower. Eliminated some lag, and improved economy 2 mpg. I also installed a 3" cat back Gibson exhaust. Sounds real nice and improved trailering. I pull a 7,000 lb camper. Increasing breathability of your engine is a good thing. The only reason manufacturers dont put these intakes on is because of noise. The common person likes to not hear their engine when accelerating. All those plastic baffles you see before the throttle body are for eliminating noise and only hinder the engines performance.

Hey Subaratech, did you dyno your truck before and after the K&N install? Just wondering how you came up with the 30 HP. Also, is this on a 5.4 or 4.6?
