My Float has liquid in it... but it floats in H2o?

I just pulled the gas tank on my truck. I need to install a new feul pump. The gas guage has never read anything but empty on this tank. No matter how much gas I put in it. The guage works for my rear tank. So I know the guage is working.

My float has liquid in it. I put the float in water and it floats. NO bubbles come out of the float, so it doeesnt seem to leak... There is a tiny dent in the float...

Would it float in gas if it floats in water?

Not necessarily.
(The opposite is true though - what floats in gas will certainly float in water).
