more talk on cats
I was reading this thread https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...d.php?t=356670 and got some useful info. I only wish the thread was still alive. Is it true that there are 4 cats on the new trucks? I've never really looked. I have a flowmaster on my 04 FX4 and while it does sound nice, it could sound better. So could I remove the cats and install two magnaflow cats instead? How hard or expensive would this be to do?

How's Texas coming on the laws? Call a couple small muffler shops in your area and tell them what you want, and see how they react. If they say it's a go, I think you could drop your back-pressure slightly, for a 4-500 buck expense. In any state in Federal compliance, like California, Florida, etc. you are not gonna find any shop that will touch them. If it is still cool to 'tamper' with your cats, I would still think long and hard on it. Not for actual emissions, I have used aftermarket high flow cats and they were cleaner than stock. The original cat's are made cheaply, high flow cats can be pretty darn good. Problem occurs when Ford uses it for an excuse to not do any engine, PCM, etc. warranty work on your truck. Also, this is a truck, and the cams and design are for torque, and low to mid range power. Opening up the exhaust helps more at high RPM, and can easily lower your low and mid range power. Doesn't matter at the track, but can make it 'lumpy' around town. Chris |
very good info, Chris. I live in AL for at least the next year so I don't know how their emission laws are (probably not very stringent). I never thought about the torque and warranty issues. That's a good point. I'm also not wanting to pay too much money. I guess i'll try to do some more research. thanks again.

I think I would consider headers if spending big bucks anyway. Good Luck!

Yep, headers could void the warranty, but sure would be nice. Maybe after warranty runs out. Good Luck!
