Gulf Pride semi synthetic 5w/20 question.
Hi, I haven't posted in a long time, and now I seem to be on a roll. If anyone will talk with me after my attempt at humor on the amsoil post, I would appreciate it. My question:
I have been using motorcraft 5/20 semi syn blend and have gotten excellent uoa reports (which I posted). I was going to Jiffy lube with my own oil, but the manger asked me to leave and go to ford. (long story, but I asked to see the spec sheet on their transmission fluid. He stated that I always brought my own oil, now I wanted to see a spec sheet, so I did not trust him. He actually asked me to leave...) Anyway, back to my question: (am I being to verbose?) I used a service station near where I worked, and the owner told me they would use 5/20 semi synthetic blend. I assumed it was going to be motorcraft (Yes, I know what happens when you ass u me). When I picked up the car, I saw that the oil listed on the work sheet was Gulf pride semi syn. I have heard of gulf, but not this oil. I cannot find much about it on the net. Is this oil okay? I assume it meets ford specs. I know that if I change it at 3000 miles everything will be okay, but I was curiouse if anyone had any info on the quality of this product. (My wife accuses me of worrying to much about oil, but she just doesn't understand...) Thanks, Dan |
You DO worry too much! Relax! It is ALL good. ....especially if you change it every 3000 miles.

Did you find this info?
Product info: http://www.gulflubricants.net/pb/330...ent_MOs_PB.pdf MSDS: http://www.gulflubricants.net/msds/3..._msds__NH_.pdf According to the Product info sheet, the oil meets both (Ford's) 930A and 153H spec. Sounds like a good oil to me! |
Interesting MSDS. Anybody notice the basestock? Hows about the percentage of add pack? Also, compare the spec sheet especially the Viscosity Index to the basestock criteria. All I can say is HHHHHMMMMMMM. This doesn't quite add up right. Knowing some of the names involved with the Gulf Lubricants, they don't cut corners. It should be a good oil. These numbers......not sure they are accurate.

BrianA, thank you. I did not find the information you linked to. I am 1000 miles away from an oil change. I will have blackstone do a UOA (I had one done on motorcraft and Blackstone sent me a lot of kits after that). If nothing else the comparison should be interesting.
Thank you to everyone who responded. Perhaps I do worry to much about oil, but it's a good worry :). Dan |
Flash,
Yes, I noticed the Group I paraffinic basestock and the additive percentage numbers. The percentages are probably just a typo. Someone probably cut and pasted them from another MSDS. Jim |
Flash, I thought that the Gulf name completely disappeared after 1986 when Gulf merged with Chevron. Apparently the Gulf trade name was sold or licensed to American Refining Group, Inc.
