Magnum comp cam for 4X4
I am shopping for a bigger cam for my Mud bogger and would like some advice. I have a 466 with D3ve heads and stock springs and valves, stealth, holley dbl pumper, headers and a 4 speed. I am wondering if the Comp Magnum Cam with 280 duration adn .530 lift will be too much cam and if i can use it with the stock valvetrain. I will use this mainly as a mudbogger and a few trails.

You need to at least put better springs on it. One of the Extreme cams would make more power because they have split lift and duration.
You will need to watch your lifter preload when you put it together or you could very easily wipe your new cam out. Crane makes shims that go under the rocker on D3 heads to increase the preload if it is to tight. It takes a little time to do,but is better than tearing the motor apart to clean all the metal out after ruining a cam. |
Ok so then what cam would you suggest with stock valvetrain?

look at a comp extreme 4x4 cam such as a x4256. i believe thats the number :-X22

I would suggest going up on that comp xtreme 4x4 cam to the x4262h, the 256 is just barely bigger than a stock cam, and you should be able to run the 262 with the stock valve train although personally I would look into getting the springs that comp recommends if your running the origanal springs now.

What are the exact specs on the x4262h monster.

Lift int-.514, exh-.524 adv duration int 262, exh 270. duration at .050 int 218, exh 226 and the LSA 111 deg

I have that cam in a 429 and it runs good and has a choppy idle. You should really upgrade springs with these cams because of the aggressive lobe ramp. Other than springs my valve train is stock.

What springs did you go with green.

My springs are Lunati's. I ran one of their cams years ago and they where comparable to the springs that Comp reccomends for that cam.
With cam failures seeming to be a common problem lately,I would use matching springs and lifters for warranty reasons. |
Thomsen, did you ever install that cam? Did you use the stock valvetrain? I am asking because my 460 is at the engine shop. It is also a 466 with d3ve heads. I just talked to them yesterday about installing a 4x4 xtreme camshaft. I was told that the whole valvetrain needs to be replaced, but I think they are just trying to sell me extra parts. The cam that is/was in the engine before, an edelbrock RPM, is much larger than the one I want to have installed and it was using all stock valvetrain. Of course, after only 40,000 miles I have a bent pushrod, collapsed lifter, and lots of engine damage but I don't know for sure if the valvetrain/cam combination was what caused it. :-X15
