engine installation
 

I want to get an F-250 or 350 (< 10 years old, in good shape), 4wd with a bad or no engine (paper, wrecking yards, etc.) and install a small turbo diesel (or turbocompounded engine if I can find one) for better mileage, even if I have to suffer a huge loss in performance (creeping uphill in low gears @ 15 mph doesn't bother me a bit) so as to achieve good fuel mileage. It makes no sense whatever to me to run a big engine fully loaded say ~ 5% of the time and running at part engine load the rest of the time with the resulting terrible mileage (say ~ 20 mpg, should be able to do much better). To that end I've been looking thru the Internet for pickup power, speed, load, torque, rpm requirements, data, graphs, curves etc. so as to determine level ground, no wind, highway speed, fully loaded power requirements with no success (Ford website, SAE, etc. - no luck). Can anyone steer me in the right direction to find some of this? It's not arcane, proprietary knowlege I wouldn't think, just regular, basic stuff.

Try a Cummins BT-4 same thing as a 5.9 like in a Dodge but less 2 cylinders, turboed and intercooled I belive was 140 hp. If you are looking for a donor car look for one of those bread/potato chip delivery vans, I have one that came on a 1 ton Chevy chassis with that motor in it.....

We recieved a 4.2l Turbo charged intercooled, I6 Diesel in our F-250's up until the end of 2002, in addition to the 7.3l we still recieve in Australia.
It was mated to the 5 speed ZF.
Ours was just a conventional diesel with no electronics:

These were also sold domestically in the Brazilian market in LHD.
If you searched around, you could probably find a slighlty used Brazilian example, and ship it to the US.

The engine was even more reliable than the 7.3l, and got around 22mpg cruising @ 65mph.
