Go to the auto store and buy some 3M Swirl Remover. http://www.hawg-wash.com/3mswirlremover.html It works well. Then, polish your truck with Zaino, use Z5 if you still see scratches. www.zainobros.com If you're not familiar with Zaino, read the website. You will at least need ZFX (or Z1), Z5, and Z6.

Clay bars will only remove the surface contaminates - while they will enhance the appearance, they will do little for "below" the surface imperfections like swirl marks.

I'd recommend the following:

Wash with high quality soap
Clay to remove surface 'gunk'
Cleaner/Polish (aka swirl remover) - I prefer Meguiar's #9 or similar product
Wax - use a polymer wax - Mother's and Meguiar's have good products
Wax again... a day or more after the first treatment (this can be another polymer or your favorite carnuba based wax)

3M is certainly a good product. Meguiars also makes Scratch-X which is a great product for removing scratches/swirls depending on how deep the imperfections are. The rule of thumb is to use the least abrasive product to do the job - thus, I'd recommend using the cleaner/polish before moving to the more aggressive Scratch-X or Swirl Remover.

I have a black truck and I take it to various shows in the summer.

Start: Wash with soap and water
For the rest of the dirt a clay bar with Meguiar's spray Quick detailer
Use a cleaner....depends on the scratch or swirl....like Meguiar's #9
Polish with Meguiar's #7
Wax on and wax off till your satisfied.
To maintain your new shine during the week use Meguiar's new NXT Speed Detailer.

Removing a scratch in clear coats. If you’re not familiar or comfortable do not attempt. Use a wet sand like Ultra Fine and buff out. If the scratch is through the clear coat you can use a touch up clear and Ultra Fine the spot.

I have used many cleaners and waxes so I don't want to sound like I work for Meguiar's....they just have good quality products.
