Ford to build military vehicle
 

I have heard from some military mechanics that I know that Foird is going to be building military vehicles like the humvee. They said GM lost the contract and starting in 2006 Ford will build similar vehicle for military. Has anyone else heard this - is this true.

The mechanics also said that the quality was not there in the vehicles now - and a change had to made because of reliabilty, strength and safety. One said when you stap some kinda gun on the back of one the rear end would drag. Lets hear it.

I would expect that if Ford had gotten a contract like this that there would have been a huge press release about it. Last I heard Humvees were still being delivered to the U.S. Military. I'd love to see (and drive) a Ford version however.

Every military Humvee I have ever driven has been pretty reliable and I've never seen the rear end of one dragging under a load.

As far as the Hummer and the H2 - biggest pieces of stuff I have ever seen.

There has been some discussion for the past couple of years about the introduction of a new commercial pickup type vehicle (similar to the older M1008 / CUCV GM based 1.25 ton pickups and 3/4 ton Blazers that the military used from the 80's)

I've seen a few of the GM versions of this truck around the GM proving ground in Michigan, they are pretty mean looking... even for a cough... :-rip GM.

I've yet to see a Ford version.

I imagine that the program has been delayed or cancelled due to all of the overseas action and the funding that is required since the trucks should have been in service by now.

In Motor Trend I saw a picture of a crew cab pickup that International is going to build for govt/military use. It's low to the ground and has a very short bed. Looks kinda like the HMMWV four door truck. Think it was the May issue with the Shelby Mustang on the cover.

First of all, for GM to lose the contract, they would have to get it first. The Humvee is produced by AM General, which is not a division of GM. What GM bought is the marketing rights to the retail name "Hummer," and all the kewl stuff that goes with it. H2's, H3's, etc are GM designs- the original H1 is not- it just has a GM powertrain.

Do any of these qualify as the International foray into gubmint vehicle production?

I know that the CXT lists at $95K and sell for upwards of $115K fully loaded, so I know I won't be touching one, but if I could find a dealer and at least get close enough to put a finger on the MXT and RXT......ah, exctasy.

My friend just went to Georgia last time I was offshore and bought a 6.2L Hummer...the "USMC" badges were even painted over in black. Maybe he will try to pull his "duece-and-a-half" with and. I'll let you know how much, if any, the Hummer sags. The "duece" won "dirtiest undercarriage" at the local carshow in April. That's how it ought to be.

Polarbear got it. GM never made the Humvee. I wouldnt be against Ford making something for the military though.

As for the International MXT...there is a civilian version that is supposed to come out next year...and Int'l is supposedly toying with reentering the light truck market in the 3/4 ton area (in a joint venture w/Hyundai???)

well i know that almost all of the flight-line trucks on McChord are Fords. Vary few GMs left anymore.

Navistar with hyundai? That doesnt make any sense to me.
