F350 Vs. Chevy 3500 Pulling Rating
 

I have an F350 pulling a 5th wheel. I am going to buy a bigger 5th wheel but can't understand why Ford rates towing capability of the F350 so low compared to the Chevy 3500. Ford=12,800 max, Chevy=17,000 max. That just eliminates the F350 as a candidate for towing the whole catagory of luxury 40 ft. 5th wheels. Comments????

What year model F350 do you have?
The 05 F350's are capable of up to 19000lbs with the Tow Boss package.

I guess he has an older <05 and is comparing a new (er) chevy yes ford DOES compete in every way shape and form. Get a crew cab Dually 6.0 4.30LS geared FX4 lariet 6spd and trust me it will have you saying chevy "What" I promise.
tow rating for the truck abouve is 18,500lbs , 1500 more than thechevy and a nicer built truck to boot with 13.5K of GVW vrs 12K gvw on the chevy with means that you can load up the front of the fiver more and put gear in the back seat for more comfy camping

with the 6.0 and towboss package the maximum tow rating is 19,200lbs.

OK what is two hundered pounds among friends.....hehe

Now there's a potential snake-pit...trailering capacities. The problem is the GCWR doesn't change, although the options and weight of the truck do- so weights range. On a "Tow Boss" equipped truck, the range is 18100-19200, depending on equipment, for 5th wheel applications only (otherwise trailering weights stay the same). On the Chevy, the range is 16300-17000. Of note, the Tow Boss is a Torqueshift-only proposition only (someone mentioned a six-speed...not on a Tow Boss).

At the rate were going we are going to need CDL's to pull at a 1 ton truck's capacity.

I recall someone in the 6.0l or SD forum (can't recall which) got booked for not having a CDL on his F350 when pulling a 5ver.

As long as your 5vr weighs less than 20,000lbs both trucks will pull them just fine regaurdless of ratings, IMO.

I have a 2001 F350 V10 dually pulling a 5th wheel which grosses out just short of 10,000. I'm looking at pulling around 15,500 pounds. Day before yesterday my RV dealer got out all his latest charts - I mean, these are the charts these guys sell from when matching RV's to their buyer's truck. According to his charts a 2005 or 2006 F350 diesel without 4x4 (gives the highest pulling power) is at 12,800 lbs. For a new Chevy 3500 Duramax I would be at 17,000. Since I already own a Ford, I'm obviously not looking for reasons to buy a Chevy ( Chevy's just can't hack the abuse compared to a Ford as any honest old farm boy will tell you.) Anyway, you guys are way ahead of me 'cause I don't know from "CDL" or "Tow Boss" but I'm willing to buy what I have to buy to stay with Ford. On the other hand, just what the begeezus does Chevy have that makes it such a puller right straight out of the box?

I am very envious.

If we're out in the fields, I'm inclined to agree with you. If we're pulling a 5vr on pavement, though, a Duramax will surprise you. A chipped Duramax will really surprise you.

Three things:
1) Duramax
2) Allison Transmission
3) It weighs 1/2 T less than a SD (think gross combined weight here)

I read that the Duramax is getting 620 ft lb and some HP and the allison is getting the tap shift 6 speed for 06.
