Seven quarts of oil?!?!

Recently, I decided to return to changing my own oil since I now own four vehicles and am tired of paying rubes at the local speedlube joint ever increasing $$.

So, after not changing my own oil in over ten years, I started with my 1980 Bronco Custom which has an automatic with the 351M engine and 95k original miles. I bought some Havoline 10w30 and a Wix oil filter.

Everything went fine but when I filled the crankcase, it took seven quarts! I did not overfill it and it has run fine ever since. It does not use oil BTW.

Does this mean this engine has a super oil capacity?

no the 300 - 6 engine takes the same amount of oil. super cap oil pans are around 10 quarts of oil if i am not mistaken

Yeah the 351M, 400, 460 and the lowly 300 I-6 all take seven quarts with a filter replacement.

Was the filter replaced?

BroncoRoadKill 05-21-2005 08:45 PM

All of my 302s and 351w take 6.
Also one of my dad's sevice trucks take 6, its a 96 f-150 w/300I6 and a 5spd.

My 88 302 holds 6 with the filter. My 82 302 took 7.

Just read.....your owners manual, Haynes manual, Chiltons manual, Ford repair disk, etc, etc.....just look up capacities.....yikes!
I have a Haynes at hand......Chapter1-3 "Capacities" Engine oil with filter change 302 & 351 is 6 quarts. This is also listed on my chiltons CD.
