390 into a Camero

I have a Grandson with a Camero (pronounced ... cam-er-roo for those of you unfamiliar with the word, cam as in camshaft, er as in erwin, and roo as in kangeroo. Ticks off his his father, my son-in-law.) Any way, the 307, or whatever piece of (stuff) that's in it, is almost dead (not that it was really ever alive). Grandson and son-in-law know next to nothing about engines.

And I have a 390 block, a 428 crank, CJ heads and a toploader and was thinking that Ch*$y people are always screwing up good Fords by putting a stupid small Ch*$y into the Ford. How about a mean Ford into a Cam-er-rooo?

Be about 416 cubes but use 352 valve covers, paint an aluminum manifold so it doesn't show maybe even a different color say yellow, stick on a big Holley carb with plain jane float bowls, shorty cast iron headers, etc, so it looks like nothing special, even get 352 decals.

Let him drive it until the rear end goes out before stepping up to a 9 inch Ford (probably about a week, certainly not more than a month) since it probably only has a 6 bolt or someting like that rear axle.

Anybody got any idea if it would fit? The Cam-er-roo is an '86 I think.

I couldn't imagine a FE's oil pan clearing a GM A-body front cross member.What year of Camaro?
I think there is too much involed here unless you are dead serious.
The motormount vs. Trans mount would set the FE/C-trans to far forward vs a GM drive train.Camaros are unibodys and could see trans tunnel problems, would have to use cable operated shifter, exhaist manifolds might be way off for actual use considering engines distance from lower firewall??

Are U shuckin and jivin'?Or serious??
I know a guy with a 440 MoPar in a Mazda RX7,and another with a 5.9 TSB Cummins in a '87 Chevy pickup. These things can be done but if i were to put a Ford in a Chevy it would go like this:

289 in a '66 Nova(the only body style i ever liked from GM)

'66 F250 blue/white(352)
'70 F250 4x4 blue/white(351w)
'76 F350 dually red(390-4v)
'79 F150 daily driver(302)

I see now,I didn't see the year at first.
Boy,i dont know.I thought you meant a old one.
The car would have had a 305 when new.The best thing for it would be to pile more metal under the hood and fill interior.
Would net you about 50 buck at the yards!!!!!!

One question:

Why on earth would you want to send a fine engine (not to mention a close relative) into a tree?

And if it is a Camaro (spelled "Che' V Too" with a body kit), why ruin it before it even leaves the driveway?

There are folks out there that collect the old BMW Isetta's, I'm sure it's worth something. Just not on a race track....

if you want my honost opinion, id say scrap that camero. the 305 block and the cars are crappy. to put a 390 in that pos wouldn't be worth your time and money. your gonna have to prolly redo the entire front part of the car. if your grandson is into fast cars, go out and get a mustang and sup that up. the 302's have alot of performance parts availible for them
this is just my 2 cents

Ya'll are missing one point. A Cameroo with a Ford engine is pay back to all those idiots that put Ch*$y engines in a Ford.

Also I've never seen this done and that would make it an interesting challenge. And wouldn't you love to see the look an the Tech inspector's face at the local drag strip!!! It will probably make the Ch*$y guys sick for a week!!!!!

Got admit that the rear end has to be re-considered. Probably put a big Autolite 4100 on there at first so the kid won't get into too much trouble. And use a small cam also, at least for awhile.

I have had several camaros over the years. These are not the cars you want to be playing with. They are a real PITA to work on. If he needs a new engine I would just buy a crate motor that "bolts" in.

If you have a lot of spare time go for it, but I think its a nightmare waiting to happen.

*Paws through all of the ideas presented here*

I suppose yu can look at it that-a-way, but I wonder if you're not rediscovering North America in the process...

Know what I mean?

There has to be a reason nobody bothered with it. The early rodders explored just about every possibility there was.

*Thinks about "Big Daddy" Ed Roth...*

But on the other hand, they didn't find out what they did by holding back -

YOU GO, boy.....

Let us know how it come out.

Got a Sideoiler (454 Dyno2000 shows over 600 HP @ 6000 and 450 ft-lbs from 2000 to 6500) and that's probably going into a Fairmont or a '66 Falcon. Building that engine is a my winter project.

This is not yet a project, got to see his car and take some measurements. A friend of his father is giving it to him and he's a year away from his license so I'm in no hurry.
