Need help decoding an engine.
 

I pulled this engine out of a '52 P5 Parcel van.

I was going to use it in my '52 Panel, but don't think that it's right.

This set of characters was stamped on the block.

Well, it's a 1963 engine. What was available from Ford in in-line sixes in 1963?

That's a 223 CID engine. that succeeded the 215 in 54. They used it up until 1964 in cars and trucks. It was commonly swapped into vehicles with the 215 because it's physically the same size and drops right in.

I think the location of the distributor makes it a 262. 215/223 were located in the middle of the block.

The 223 and 262 had the distributor up front. The 215 had it in the middle. This is according to both my 57-63 and 64-72 parts books. I guess this may be another case of measuring bore and stroke,

Decoding engine
 

Looks like a 223 to me. The belting up front is a little different.

THat's the way the drive belts ran in a Parcel delivery, different from a car or truck.

the valve cover bolts tell me its 1960-up....pre 1960 223 had 2 bolts through the top..

It's most likely a 63-64 223, judging by the casting number and the valve cover. I hadn't noticed the bolts before.

Yep disagreeing with Barry is a losing proposistion. Thank god he has the books and resourses he does. I wish I had them. Oh wait we do. Just have to ask him

If I'm wrong, PLEASE let me know. I hate to be wrong and it bums me out, but I've always said.... You never stop learning until they close the lid. lord knows, I'm still learning every time I open those books. So, keep throwing those questions my way. I want to know as much as I can on these trucks. Plus, it keeps my hands into Ford parts. Being disabled as I am, I can't do the fast paced jobs that go with Ford parts. I'll bet I've run a million miles in various parts rooms where I've worked!

pictures a worth there weight in gold...........look at the left side view, theres no road draft tube as original, or pcv valve as later... the more I loke the more I see

I've got a completely rebuilt 1962 223cid that looks just like this one. I'm planning on going down to storage today to see my truck so while I'm there I'll grab the engine codes and see if they match yours.

I just came back from my storage and here is the engine code on my 1962 6cyl 223cid. engine.

Engine Code: C3AE-6015-F

Looks like everything is identical to yours except the last letter.
