ford 9" rearend
 

A friend of mine is practicly giving me a 89 9" rear end and I want to put it in my 95 f150. Is this swap something I can do my self with regular hand tools or do I need professional asistance? also what is the gear ratio for the 9, so I can find a new kit for the front. Or would it be worth finding another 9 for the front? Will this swap cost me lots of $$$. Thanks guys

first off are you sure it's a 9" ford there shouldn't have been one in a 89 second the ford 9" has probably the widest selection of gear ratios of any rearend ever made, so there is no way of knowing what gear ratio is in that one without more info, and it would be easier and cheaper to change gears in 9" to match the front than the change the front unless it has some real desirable gears for what you are doing.

If the axle is an 89 its not a 9" as they stopped producing the 9" in 86 when they changed body styles, but in the 85-86 the 8.8 is the more common of the 2 offered in the later years of the early 80 ford 1/2 tons. So you should double check the year in that axle to make sure.

But if its a 9" then you will lose your rear abs (no biggie really, don't really work all that well when wore anyway), the brake line fitting and e-brake cables will be same if i remember right.

all above that is said is true, the fords from 89 and up era have a speed sensor on the rear end, and the 9" didnt have it, so you will run into lots of problems trying to run that rear end, i recommend selling it for $$$ and using that $$ on your truck.

I'd like to see that. You may be looking for a long time.

currie, and sunray engineering make nine fronts. I am sure others will as well. but plan on spending some major bling.

Also, You'll have no speedo unless you figure out a way to relocate your speed sensor.

ford made a transfer case mount speed sensor, i saw one on an '87 bronco i was under about a week ago. It has the normal gear like for a mechanical speedo, but goes to a sensor with two wires coming out of it.

Yeah the speedo sensor is in the t-case, and the tone ring is only for the abs sensor on the 1/2 tons if i remember correctly.

the tone ring also senses speed and tells the E4OD when to shift and how the engine is running and all sorts of other BS they could put in there with it.

you can drop in a sterling with the tone ring and they hook right up and work just fine.

Ah yes i'm confusing the E4OD with the AOD, my bad.

That's what I was gonna say, find a 10.25.

Question: Which hangs lower? 10.25 or 9"? I know the big "snag" (pun not intended) with the 10.25 is that it is "relatively" low-hanging for the pumpkin to snag.

10.25 will hang lower

I figured that, but how much? Is it very dramatic?

the 9" hangs down approx 5-1/2" from axle center line, the 10.25 hangs down a little over 6"
