NY Registration

Can I register an '02 F250 4x4 CC 6 foot bed with passenger plates in NY? I bought the truck out of state, and left them my passenger plates. The plates came back along with the new commercial plates, the company that handles out of state registration said that NYS requires commercial plates. I need passenger plates, I have parkways all around me, and I see 4x4 CC duallys with passenger plates, with no cap or bed cover, so should I assume it was a mistake? The truck will be used for pleasure only, not a work truck.

They listed the truck as 8800 lbs GVW.

If the actual weight ("shipping weight") of the truck is less than 5500 lbs., then you can put NY passenger plates on it. Otherwise, you'll have to put a cap on the box and a seat in the box to make it a passenger vehicle. I don't see how a dualie with no cap can have passenger plates on it in this state.

I went to the website, I agree with you, that's what it says. But, I drove around and looked at trucks all week with no commercial plates, so they must know something I don't know. My best friend swears he had passenger plates on his F350 CC, and I just saw a Dodge CC heavyduty dually with passenger plates. I'm going to the DMV on Friday to see what I need to do.

It can be done. You need to provide a receipt for a cap with two seats and seat belt. It will be a lot harder to do now that the truck has been tagged commercial, but not impossible. Notice, I said provide a receipt and not necessarily have the items.. Hint Hint

I do have a crew cab, do I only need to cover the bed? Tonneau cover?

south_paw 02-28-2005 08:03 PM

Thats up to you. I don't. If your worried about tickets only a cap will due and thats no guarantee. If you ask a trooper they will tell you you need to have camping equipment fixed in the bed of the truck. The DMV says a cap, seats and seat belts will due. Nobody is on the same page with this issue. That works in your favor :) Get the plates and don't worry about it. I have had Troopers behind me on the side of me and never had a problem. F250 CC PSD to boot!!

I have passenger plates on my F-250, no problem on the parkways. Technically it's a no no, grossly overweight. I don't have a cap (hard tonneu cover), and have attracted some attention, but try it with a dually, thats a red flag.

I'm in NY and registered my 05 f350 cc 8' bed srw 6.0 deisel as passenger. Just have to tell DMV that you installed a cap, seats and seatbelts in the bed. Use form MV-82 from http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/forms.htm I suggest you leave the weight blank. They don't require a reciept. You just have to state on the form that it was done. Once you receive the plates there is no requirement to keep the cap on or seats in. So did they ever exist?....hmmm. As long as you don't add any writing on the side of the vehicle cops won't bother you. As for the dually I don't know, but no one ever asked me if mine was or not. Good Luck!

Well, after 2.5 hours waiting at the Herald Square DMV, I got my passenger plates. I lucked out, the clerk was an old man who kind of knew what I was trying to do, so he said, "Let's play guess the weight of the truck until the computer accepts it as a passenger car." He put down 5200 lbs for the unladen weight, 5400 GVW. $16 to switch the plates over, so I'm a pretty happy camper now.

You guys are playing with fire if they decide to start weighing you or enforce the laws.

A friend has a Dodge dually with passenger plates (legal), he has been stopped on the Southern State Parkway. Alot of vehicles, SuperDuties included, far exceed the weight limit restriction (6000 lbs) on the parkways, but duallies are like waving a red flag.

My lady wasn't as dumb, her husband had a F250, so I thought I would get a break. Nope, commercial plate for me.

Dave Sponaugle 03-04-2005 05:37 PM

If they pull you on the scales and you are 2000 pounds over weight with an empty truck, you are going to have a hard time getting it legal before you can move it.

I just got my US DOT number for mine because it is registered for over 10,000 pounds.

captchas 03-04-2005 05:37 PM

just move to new jersey.pay the pasenger at commerial fee by the weight class. i've got milatary member plates on mine but it still costs 128 per year

Netfly 03-04-2005 05:51 PM

Congrats Paddy Whacker. Seems silly they should care about the weight of a pickup but not an Excursion. See you on the parkways !

south_paw 03-04-2005 08:08 PM

or a avalanche, escalade, expedition, hummer 1 & 2, any limo or 15 pass van... There isnt a lot they can do about it. "if the people lead, the leaders will follow". The law was revised a few years back because of the overwhelming crying of pickup truck owners. So the they got cute and put a 5k weight limit on the law.Well SUV craze was just starting up and now you got 8000lbs SUV's cruising the parkways. The cops know the law is obsolete & they wont bother you. Just don't go on there with a trailer:)

Just to let you know , when I bought my F 250 SD ext cab about 3 months ago I tranferd my plates off my F150 supercrew and every thing was fine, I was wrong I recieved a letter from Albany DMV stating that type truck was A work truck and it was over the rating for pass plates, they gave me 30 days to change my plates and if I did'nt they were going to revoke my pass plates..Just maybe I was one of the unluckys .Now If you can get away with tru DMV don't get caught hauling or towing more than A F150 can or you will pay in fines $$$$.

texan2004 03-12-2005 03:40 PM

I can't imagine living in place like this. You can't drive your pick-up truck on certain highways????? If your pick-up truck truck can haul a large boat or camper you have to have commercial plates???

Do you guys need a special driver's license as well?? Just curious.

This is crazy.

Paddy Whacker 03-12-2005 07:22 PM

nyco, did you fill out the section that states you have the sealed bed and extra seats? I found a document on the DMV website and it states no matter what the weight, if you have the seats in the bed and a cover or tarp (yes they used the word tarp), the truck was considered a camper, and must be registered as a passenger car. I wrote down "second row of seats with seat belts and tonneau cover," which technically I have with a crew cab. Like mentioned prior, its an old law, so if you need to drive on the parkways, give it another shot, with the revised paper work. I live off the Meadowbrook Parkway, with the Southern State just north of me, so it would be a real pain in the tail if I couldn't get on the parkways. I do use it for pleasure only. I was next to a trooper today, with a Hemi crew cab next to both of us, we towered over the trooper, both of us had an open bed, and the trooper didn't respond.

I live in CT and plan to buy a F350 CC soon to tow my camper, Since the truck is 11,000GVWR, I hope I'm not forced to register it commercial.

Anybody know or find what the CT regulations say about trucks being considered a camper? I've search the DMV-CT website and cannot find anything. I like "Paddy Whacker" suggestion of calling it a second row seat.
